Tunisia
Tunisia is a few hours' flight from Europe's main cities and is on UTC+1 all year round. Visit the Tunis medina, Carthage, the El Jem amphitheatre and Kairouan, stay on the beach in Hammamet, Sousse or Djerba, and head for the Tozeur oases and the Douz dunes between October and April.
Tunisia at a glance
Between the Mediterranean and the Sahara, Tunisia brings together World Heritage medinas, the ruins of Carthage and Dougga, beach resorts and oases. Tunis is 2h25 from Paris and 2 hours from Lyon by direct flighta few hours' flight from Europe's main cities, direct or with one stop. The country is on UTC+1 all year round, as it has not used daylight saving time since 2009: the same time as Paris in winter and 1 hour behind in summerthe same time as Brussels in winter and 1 hour behind in summerthe same time as Geneva in winter and 1 hour behind in summerthe same time as Luxembourg in winter and 1 hour behind in summer1 hour ahead of London in winter and the same time in summer1 hour ahead of Dublin in winter and the same time in summerthe same time as Frankfurt in winter and 1 hour behind in summerthe same time as Vienna in winter and 1 hour behind in summerthe same time as Amsterdam in winter and 1 hour behind in summerthe same time as Rome in winter and 1 hour behind in summerthe same time as Madrid in winter and 1 hour behind in summer1 hour ahead of Lisbon in winter and the same time in summerthe same time as Warsaw in winter and 1 hour behind in summerthe same time as Prague in winter and 1 hour behind in summerthe same time as Stockholm in winter and 1 hour behind in summerthe same time as Copenhagen in winter and 1 hour behind in summerthe same time as Oslo in winter and 1 hour behind in summer1 hour behind Helsinki in winter and 2 hours behind in summer. The currency is the Tunisian dinar, which can only be obtained in the country. French is very widely spoken, and road signs are mostly bilingual, in Arabic and French.
The French are by far the largest group of European visitors: in 2023 the ONTT (the Tunisian National Tourist Office) counted 2,544,671 arrivals of Europeans, including 1,015,725 French, 303,027 German and 194,970 British visitors. Europeans spend an average of 5.8 nights in hotels; Germans stay 8.4 nights.
People come for three things, often in the same trip: beaches and thalassotherapy, from Hammamet to Djerba; ancient and Islamic heritage, from Carthage to Kairouan; and the desert, from Tozeur and Douz.
Five zones and eleven regions
Sabaro divides the country into five zones and eleven regions, each built around one or more hotels in its selection.
Tunis, Carthage and the North
- Tunis: the medina, a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage site since 1979, holds some 700 monuments. The Bardo National Museum, in a 19th-century palace of the beys, has one of the largest collections of Roman mosaics anywhere. Dougga, 113 km away, is a Roman town preserved as a whole; Thuburbo Majus and the Zaghouan water temple are about an hour's drive.
- Carthage, Sidi Bou Said and Gammarth: the remains of Carthage spread along the Gulf of Tunis, 15 km from the airport. A combined ticket covers the Antonine Baths, the theatre, the amphitheatre and the Early Christian museum, which reopened in December 2025. Sidi Bou Said is home to Baron d'Erlanger's Ennejma Ezzahra palace; the big seafront hotels are in Gammarth. Bizerte and Ichkeul National Park, a World Heritage site since 1980, are less than an hour away.
- Tabarka and Kroumirie: a port on the Coral Coast, 171 km from Tunis airport, with a Genoese fort, dive sites and an 18-hole golf course. Bulla Regia and its Roman houses with underground floors are 159 km from the airport. The cork-oak forests of Ain Draham are covered on the region page, with your country's advice: the town, 4.6 km from Algeria, lies on the edge of or inside the border strips that several ministries advise against, and some advise against its mountains.
Hammamet and Cap Bon
- Hammamet, Nabeul and Cap Bon: Hammamet's medina and kasbah are 75 km from Tunis airport, about an hour by motorway, with the Yasmine Hammamet resort to the south. Out on the peninsula are Kerkouane, the only surviving Punic city and a UNESCO site since 1986, the fortress of Kelibia, the ancient quarries of El Haouaria and the hot springs of Korbous, where you bathe in rock pools by the sea.
The Sahel and central Tunisia
- Sousse and Port El Kantaoui: an Aghlabid medina listed in 1988, a ribat completed in 821 and an archaeological museum in the kasbah. Port El Kantaoui, with its marina and 36 holes of golf, is a few minutes north. Monastir airport is 15 km away.
- Monastir: birthplace of Habib Bourguiba, first president of independent Tunisia, with a ribat founded in 795-796, his gold-domed mausoleum and two golf courses. The Kuriat islands lie about 18 km offshore.
- Mahdia, El Jem and Sfax: built between 238 and 250 and 36 m high, the El Jem amphitheatre is one of the largest in the Roman world. Mahdia, once the Fatimid caliphs' city, runs its medina along a narrow peninsula and its hotels along golden beaches. Sfax has a medina entirely enclosed by walls, and the ferry reaches the Kerkennah islands in an hour.
- Kairouan: founded in 670, the foremost holy city of the Maghreb and a World Heritage site since 1988; its Great Mosque became the model for mosques across the Maghreb and al-Andalus. Kairouan is 56 km from Sousse. The Roman and Byzantine site of Sbeitla, 109 km away, is in Kasserine governorate, which some ministries advise against: the region page describes it without offering it, with your country's advice.
Djerba and the South-East
- Djerba, Zarzis and the South-East: Djerba has been a World Heritage site since 2023 for its island settlement pattern, with Ibadi mosques, the fondouks (old caravanserais) of Houmt Souk, El Ghriba synagogue and the Djerbahood murals in Erriadh. The region reaches Zarzis, the coastal oasis of Gabès, the troglodyte houses of Matmata, 129 km from Houmt Souk, and the ksour, fortified granaries, around Tataouine. Chenini and Douiret, south of Tataouine, are advised against by some ministries: the region page presents them with your country's advice.
The Saharan South
- Douz and the Sahara: in Douz, home of the Mrazig, once nomadic camel herders, the sand desert begins at the hotel gates, and the camel market is held on Thursdays. Ksar Ghilane, Tembaine and Jbil National Park, further south, are presented with your country's advice: some ministries advise against the desert south of a line through Tozeur, Douz and Tataouine.
- Tozeur, Nefta and the Jerid: the brick medina of Ouled el-Hadef and a palm grove of almost 1,000 ha in Tozeur, the Corbeille of Nefta, a centre of Sufism, the Chott el Djerid salt flat crossed by a road, and the Star Wars sets of Ong Jmel and Mos Espa. The mountain oases of Chebika, Tamerza and Midès, inside the Algerian border strips that several ministries advise against, are described but not offered.
When to go
Tunisia has two travel seasons: May to October for the coast, October to April for the Saharan south. Most Europeans visit between April and October; in 2025, July, August and October were the three busiest months.
| Month | Tunis, high | Djerba, high | Sea at Djerba | Tozeur, high |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 16 °C | 17 °C | 15 °C | 17 °C |
| March | 19 °C | 21 °C | 16 °C | 23 °C |
| May | 27 °C | 27 °C | 21 °C | 32 °C |
| July | 34 °C | 33 °C | 28 °C | 40 °C |
| September | 31 °C | 31 °C | 28 °C | 35 °C |
| November | 22 °C | 23 °C | 22 °C | 23 °C |
These are the 1991-2020 normals of the WMO (World Meteorological Organization); sea temperatures are ten-year averages.
- The sea is warm from June to October: 24 to 29 °C at Djerba, 22 to 27 °C at Tunis. July and August bring 32 to 35 °C on the coast; May, June, September and October are milder.
- Winter is mild on the coast, 16 to 18 °C by day, but wet in the north: over 50 mm of rain a month in Tunis from October to February, and 150 to 165 mm a month in Tabarka from November to January. Djerba gets less than 35 mm a month.
- The Saharan south is pleasant from October to April, with 17 to 30 °C by day in Tozeur and Douz and cool nights in December and January, 4 to 8 °C. From June to September it reaches 35 to 40 °C.
- Ramadan 2027 is expected from 8 February to 9 March. The guide Ramadan and public holidays 2027 gives the key dates and what changes for visitors.
The big summer festivals, in Carthage, Hammamet and Dougga, fill July and August; the International Sahara Festival takes over Douz from 19 to 22 December 2026.
Getting there
Each airport serves a different part of the country:
| Airport | For | Flight |
|---|---|---|
| Tunis-Carthage | Tunis, Carthage, Hammamet, Tabarka | 2h25 from Paris and 2 hours from Lyon by direct flighta few hours' flight from Europe's main cities, direct or with one stop |
| Monastir | Sousse, Monastir, Mahdia, Kairouan | 2h35 from Paris and 2 hours from Lyon by direct flighta few hours' flight from Europe's main cities, direct or with one stop |
| Djerba-Zarzis | Djerba, Zarzis, Matmata, Tataouine | 2h50 from Paris and 2h20 from Lyon by direct flighta few hours' flight from Europe's main cities, direct or with one stop |
| Tozeur-Nefta | Tozeur, Nefta, Douz | 2h55 from Paris by direct flighta few hours' flight from Europe's main cities, direct or with one stop |
Djerba has direct flights all year from Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes and Brussels, and seasonal ones from Geneva, Basel-Mulhouse, Zurich, Nice and several German cities. Enfidha-Hammamet airport, between Hammamet and Sousse, is served mainly from the UK, Switzerland and Eastern Europe. The Airports and flights page gives the airlines, seasons and flight times of direct flights from your country.
On the ground, the A1 motorway follows the coast from Tunis to the Libyan border: Hammamet is an hour from Tunis airport, Sousse 2 h 10 and Houmt Souk about 7 hours. For the south-west, flying or using the main roads is recommended: Tunisair Express links Tunis with Djerba and Tozeur, and a train leaves Tunis at 7.25 am and reaches Tozeur at 6.30 pm. The guide Getting around Tunisia covers transfers, trains and driving.
Entry requirements
- Passport required. Since 1 January 2025 national ID cards are no longer accepted, even on package holidays, according to the ONTT.
- Visa-free stay and passport validity. Both depend on nationality: the entry requirements table on this page gives the rule for your country. Sabaro recommends a passport valid for at least 6 months after arrival.
The guide Tunisia visa and entry requirements covers border checks and the rules for minors and dual nationals. Dinars may not be brought in or taken out: change money on arrival and keep the exchange slips, as the guide Money in Tunisia explains.
Safety
None of the European foreign ministries Sabaro follows advises against Tunisia as a whole. A state of emergency has been in force since November 2015, and vigilance remains the rule in tourist areas. The ministries advise against the country's edges: the central-western mountains near Algeria, the Algerian border strip, the far Saharan south, which is a military zone, and the town of Ben Guerdane, near Libya. Their limits differ for a few well-known sites, such as Sbeitla, the mountain oases, Ksar Ghilane and Chenini. Foreign ministries do not all give the same advice. Here is your country's:
| Country | Official advice | Source |
|---|---|---|
| France | The country is under heightened vigilance and a state of emergency in force since 24 November 2015. Keep away from demonstrations and from places where security forces are posted, avoid night travel off the main roads, and fly or use the motorway to reach the south-west. A passport has been compulsory since 1 January 2025. Advised against (red): the far-south Saharan area near Libya and Algeria (military zone created in August 2013, entry by prior permit), the town of Ben Guerdane, and Mounts Orbata, Selloum, Semmama, Chaambi and Mghila. Advised against unless essential (orange): the desert south and east of the Bir Rjim Maatoug – Borj Bourguiba – Ben Guerdane line; the areas between Mounts Chaambi, Semmama and Mghila, south of Mount Selloum and around Mount Orbata; in Jendouba and Le Kef governorates, a 5 km strip along the Algerian border except roads to official crossings. Check with the authorities before visiting rural areas between Kasserine, Sbeitla, Sidi Bouzid and Gafsa off the Gafsa-Kasserine and Gafsa-Sidi Bouzid roads. Table de Jugurtha (Le Kef): on organised tours with a guide. Its map, dated 4 February 2026, also shows an orange strip along the whole Algerian border. | Ministère de l'Europe et des Affaires étrangères (France Diplomatie), Conseils aux voyageurs, Sécurité (Site last updated 15 September 2026) |
| Belgium | With due vigilance, travellers may visit Tunisia except the border areas with Algeria and Libya. Outside the coastal zone, use certified tour operators and agencies in close contact with the Tunisian security services. Heat (over 40 °C) and forest fires in summer. Strongly advised against: the Algerian border area west of the Jendouba – Le Kef – Kasserine – Feriana – Tameghza (Tamerza) axis, and the mountain areas of Kasserine and Le Kef governorates; the Libyan border area south of the Rjim Maatoug – Bir Ellouza – Bir Aouine – Borj Bourguiba – Remada – Ben Guerdane axis (military zone). Travel in the far south requires a permit from Tataouine governorate. | SPF Affaires étrangères, Commerce extérieur et Coopération au Développement (Belgique), Conseils aux voyageurs (Site last updated 2 October 2026) |
| Switzerland | Travel to Tunisia is considered generally safe. The political, social and economic situation is tense (demonstrations, strikes, possible curfews); the 2015 state of emergency remains in force and the risk of terrorist attacks persists nationwide. Reach your destination before nightfall. Advised against: the Algerian border area west of the Tabarka – Tozeur road, including the whole of Kasserine governorate (kidnapping risk in the Chaambi, Selloum and Mghila mountains); the Libyan border region. Tourist and non-urgent travel advised against south of the line Algerian border – Tozeur – Douz – Tataouine – Zarzis. The towns of Tabarka, Tozeur, Douz, Tataouine and Zarzis may be visited with the stated precautions; desert trips only in a group with a reliable local guide. | Département fédéral des affaires étrangères (DFAE, Suisse), Conseils pour les voyages (Site last updated 3 November 2025) |
| United Kingdom | Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Tunisia; higher risk around religious and tourist sites, festivals, government buildings and places where foreigners gather. State of emergency since 2015, frequent checkpoints. Demonstrations mostly at weekends and on national dates (14 January, 17 December). Possible power cuts in summer. Against all travel: Chaambi Mountains National Park; military operations zones of Mounts Salloum, Sammamma and Mghila; the militarised zone south of El Borma and Dhehiba; within 20 km of the Libyan border north of Dhehiba; Ben Guerdane and its surroundings. Against all but essential travel: north and west of Ghardimaou (Jendouba governorate), including El Feidja National Park; within 20 km of the Algerian border in El Kef and Jendouba governorates south of Jendouba town, including Chemtou; the whole of Kasserine governorate, including Sbeitla; within 10 km of the rest of the Algerian border south of Kasserine governorate; within 10 km of Mount Mghila; Mount Orbata; within 75 km of the Libyan border, including Remada and El Borma, excluding Zarzis, the C118 road and Medenine governorate north of it. Travelling against FCDO advice can invalidate travel insurance. | Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO, ministère britannique des affaires étrangères), Foreign travel advice (Site last updated 24 July 2026) |
| Germany | The security situation has broadly stabilised, but the terrorist risk remains high, including at busy tourist spots; stronger police presence in summer. State of emergency nationwide. Decree-Law 54 provides up to ten years in prison for spreading 'false information' online. Desert trips only in organised groups with a guide. Travel advised against: south and south-east of the line Algerian border – Tozeur/Nefta – Douz – Ksar Ghilane – Tataouine – Zarzis; the immediate Algerian border area, especially the mountains from Ain Draham to Kasserine governorate inclusive; Mounts Chaambi, Selloum and Mghila; individual, unorganised desert tours. Ben Guerdane and surroundings: particularly tense. A strip of about 20 km along the Libyan border and part of the southern Algerian border are military zones closed without a governorate permit. | Auswärtiges Amt (ministère fédéral des affaires étrangères, Allemagne), Reise- und Sicherheitshinweise (Site last updated 6 October 2026) |
| Luxembourg | Luxembourg's foreign ministry publishes no Tunisia-specific advice: it refers travellers to the travel advice of Belgium, France and Germany. | Ministère des Affaires étrangères et européennes, de la Défense, de la Coopération et du Commerce extérieur (Luxembourg), Avis de voyage (accessed 20 October 2026) |
| Ireland | High degree of caution and strong security awareness; state of emergency since 24 November 2015. Avoid unnecessary travel, especially at night outside urban areas, and demonstrations (frequent on Friday afternoons in city centres). Do not travel: Chaambi Mountain National Park; within 30 km of the borders with Algeria and Libya; Ben Guerdane and surroundings; the militarised zone of Tataouine governorate south of (but not including) El Borma. National Guard permission needed for some desert areas near the Algerian border. | Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA, ministère irlandais des affaires étrangères), Travel advice (Site last updated 16 July 2025) |
| Sweden | Since 30 March 2023, following an improved security situation, the Swedish ministry only advises against specific border and mountain areas. Against all travel: within 30 km of the Libyan border and Ben Guerdane; the militarised Chaambi, Samamma, Mghila, Selloum and Orbata mountains; the area south of El Borma and Dhehiba. Against non-essential travel: within 30 km of the Algerian border south of Jendouba town, except the Table de Jugurtha plateau; within 5 km of the Algerian border from Gafsa region southwards, except the town of Tamaghza (Tamerza). | Utrikesdepartementet (UD, ministère suédois des affaires étrangères), UD avråder (Site last updated 30 March 2023) |
| Denmark | The whole country except the orange and red zones: stay alert and follow the authorities, media and your travel agency. High terrorist risk; state of emergency, checks at tourist sites, photo ID compulsory. Do not go alone into the mountains or desert: use recognised agencies and guides. Red (very high risk): Mounts Chaambi, Salloum, Sammamma, Mghila and Orbata; the area south of a line passing south of El Borma and Remada and north of Ben Guerdane. Orange (non-essential travel advised against): the Algerian border area from south of Jendouba and Ghardimaou (P6 road) to El Borma, except Jendouba, Le Kef and Dahmani towns (yellow); Kasserine governorate except Kasserine town (yellow); the area south of a line from El Borma to south of Zarzis, including Remada but not Tataouine (yellow). | Udenrigsministeriet (ministère danois des affaires étrangères), Rejsevejledninger (Site last updated 18 May 2026) |
| Poland | State of emergency in force; photographing military and government sites or security forces is forbidden (arrest of at least 5 days possible). After the summer 2026 heatwave, electricity, running water and fuel supplies are back to normal and bottled water is gradually returning to shops. Level 3: region 1, the Sahara and desert areas near the Algerian and Libyan borders, excluding tourist routes; region 2, the central-western mountains (Mounts Orbata, Selloum, Semmama, Chaambi and Mghila). | Ministerstwo Spraw Zagranicznych (ministère polonais des affaires étrangères), service Odyseusz (Site last updated 3 September 2026) |
| Czechia | Increased caution during the stay, especially outside hotel resorts; avoid crowded places off the usual routes, isolated areas and going out at night; restrict photos to resorts and monuments, no public buildings or strangers. State of emergency since 24/11/2015. Warning against travel: areas near the Algerian and Libyan borders; mountains of Kasserine and Le Kef governorates; towns around Siliana and Kasserine; the desert south of the Bir Rjim Maatoug – Borj Bourguiba – Ben Guerdane line; the north-western mountains.
