Eid al-Adha 1448, known in Tunisia as Eid el-Kebir, is expected to be celebrated on Sunday 16 May 2027, with a second public holiday on Monday 17 May, according to the public-holiday forecasts of qppstudio, a calendar publisher. The official date will be set by the religious authorities after sighting the crescent moon that opens the month of Dhu al-Hijjah, and may shift by a day.

The festival of sacrifice

Eid al-Adha, the "festival of sacrifice", falls on 10 Dhu al-Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar, and marks the end of the hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca. In the Maghreb it is called Eid el-Kebir, the "great festival", as opposed to Eid es-Seghir, the little festival at the end of Ramadan.

The festival commemorates the faith of Ibrahim, the biblical Abraham, who was ready to sacrifice his son at God's command until God put a ram in his place at the last moment. In remembrance, families sacrifice an animal, most often a sheep, after a special morning prayer; part of the meat, a third by tradition, goes to the poor.

The sheep, a matter of budget

In Tunisia, the price of sheep is subject to public measures: in May 2026 the Ministry of Agriculture set reference prices of TND 23.8 to 27 per kilo live weight, about €7 to €8, at two supervised sales points near Tunis, in Essaïda and Radès. The farmers' union estimated at the time that an "acceptable" sheep sold for TND 1,300 to 1,750, about €390 to €520.

Travelling over Eid

Both days of Eid are public holidays: check the opening hours of sites, museums and shops before each visit.

Mid-May is the start of the beach season. In Djerba the average May high is 27 °C and the sea 21 °C; in the Saharan south it is already hot, with an average high of 32.3 °C in Tozeur and 31.9 °C in Kebili, near Douz. The three beach hotels chosen by Sabaro on the island are described on the Djerba, Zarzis and the South-East page.

In May, Tunisia is the same time as London. The Jewish pilgrimage to El Ghriba in Djerba culminates a week later, at Lag BaOmer on 24 and 25 May 2027, if the organising committee confirms it.

The Ramadan and public holidays 2027 guide gives the full calendar for the year, and the customs in Tunisia guide the rules on dress and behaviour.
