Villa Didon is the hotel to choose if you want to sleep in the heart of Carthage: ten suites open to the Bay of Tunis at the top of Byrsa hill, the former acropolis of the Punic city, above the ancient ports. It is a small hotel of design and art, with a suspended pool facing the sea, a marble hammam and a garden terrace that comes alive in the evening.

An 1897 hotel reimagined in 2004

The address has a long history. The Grand Hôtel Saint-Louis opened here in 1897; the building was rebuilt in the 1960s, then reimagined by Philippe Boisselier and reopened in spring 2004 as Villa Didon, after Dido, the legendary founding queen of Carthage. The hotel is owned by the Loukil family.

The villa displays more than twenty works by Tunisian and international artists, including calligraphed steles by Rachid Koraïchi. Art is as much part of a stay here as the view.

Ten suites open to the Mediterranean

Every suite looks out over the bay. Their distinctive feature is that bathroom and bedroom form a single space, open to each other and facing the Mediterranean. The three categories, from 47 to 52 m², are much alike; the Senior Suite is the largest.

All sleep two people, so the villa does not suit families or friends hoping to share a suite. The open plan, with no door between bath and bed, is designed first and foremost for couples.

A day at the villa, from La Proue to Le Perchoir

  • La Proue is the suspended pool facing the bay. Breakfast is served here from 8.30 am to noon, followed by lunch by the water; on Sundays the menu is Tunisian.
  • Le RestÔ is the Mediterranean restaurant.
  • Le Spa combines a marble hammam and a relaxation room.
  • Le Perchoir is a hanging garden terrace: a lounge by day, it hosts DJ evenings from 10 pm, booked by phone.
  • Le Light Bar serves cocktails.

Times are local. On DJ nights Le Perchoir stays lively late, worth knowing if you are looking for silence.

Carthage on the doorstep

The villa is on rue Mendès France on Byrsa hill, next to the Acropolium, the former Cathedral of Saint Louis, and the National Museum of Carthage, closed since 2018 with no reopening date for its renovation. The archaeological site of Carthage, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, is visited on a combined ticket: the Antonine Baths, the Roman theatre, the park of Roman villas, the amphitheatre, the Magon quarter and the Paleo-Christian museum, which reopened in December 2025. The ticket costs TND 20, about €6, rising to TND 30, about €9, on 1 January 2027; the site opens 8.30 am-5 pm in winter and 8 am-6 pm in summer, local time. Details are in our guide to sites and museums.

Sidi Bou Said and La Marsa are a few kilometres away, served by the TGM suburban train (Tunis-Goulette-Marsa). Tunis-Carthage airport is about 15 km away, a quarter of an hour without traffic. See our Carthage and Sidi Bou Said page. In summer, the Carthage International Festival holds its concerts in Carthage's Roman theatre.

Through the seasons

The villa is open all year. La Proue comes into its own from May to October, when daytime highs in Tunis exceed 26 °C; from November to April, a stay revolves around sightseeing, the hammam and the view.

Prices

In October 2026, for two nights in March 2027, the cheapest suite was offered at about €215 a night for two adults, breakfast included, with free cancellation, all taxes included. Tourist tax is extra and paid on site: TND 12 per person per night in 4- and 5-star hotels, about €3.60, and TND 8 in 3-star hotels; the amount that applies to the villa is confirmed with the offer.

Sabaro's view

Who it suits: couples who love art, architecture and ancient history, who want Carthage on foot and a view of the bay; honeymooners (see honeymoon).

Highlights: the setting on Byrsa hill; the suspended pool; the art collection; only ten suites.

Good to know: there is no beach and no family room; evenings at Le Perchoir can be lively; reviews are more mixed than for Maison Dedine, at 4 out of 5 on Tripadvisor (233 reviews). For a quieter adults-only house, see Maison Dedine in Sidi Bou Said; for the beach, The Residence Tunis. More addresses are on our boutique hotels page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I explore Carthage on foot from Villa Didon?

Yes for Byrsa hill and the Acropolium, right next to the villa, and the Punic ports below. The other sites on the combined ticket, such as the Antonine Baths, are spread across the town and linked by the TGM train or a taxi.

Are the suites suitable for a family?

No: all suites sleep two people, and the bathroom is open to the bedroom.

Is the National Museum of Carthage open?

No: it has been closed since 2018. A tender for its renovation was launched in June 2026, with no reopening date. The Paleo-Christian museum, however, reopened on 3 December 2025.

Is there a restaurant?

Yes: Le RestÔ, serving Mediterranean cuisine, and lunches at La Proue, with a Tunisian menu on Sundays. Le Light Bar and Le Perchoir serve cocktails.

What is the safety advice in Carthage?

Several ministries ask for heightened vigilance throughout the country. The area around the presidential palace in Carthage may be closed to traffic; police instructions must then be followed strictly. See our Tunisia safety guide.
