Dar El Jeld is the place to stay inside the Tunis medina with the comfort of a proper hotel: 16 generous suites, a hammam and a restaurant in a fully renovated mansion on rue Dar El Jeld, between the Kasbah and the entrance to the souks. The medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, holds some 700 monuments (palaces, mosques, mausoleums, madrasas, or Koranic schools, and fountains), and staying here lets you explore it on foot early in the morning and in the evening, once the day visitors have gone.
A medina mansion around a garden
The sixteen suites are arranged around a garden of lemon trees, like a traditional Tunisian house turned towards its courtyard: windows face the garden and the street stays outside. That is what sets Dar El Jeld apart from the medina's guesthouses. It offers full hotel service, with 24-hour room service and breakfast served in your suite or on the rooftop.
Suites from 65 to 95 m²
The hotel has suites only, which is unusual in a medina where rooms are often small. The three categories differ in space: for a couple, the Suite Junior and its sitting area are enough; for a long stay, the Suite separates bedroom and living room.
All have a king-size bed, a bathtub and a shower, a coffee machine and free wifi. A baby can share the parents' room; for a family with an older child, the Suite Deluxe is the only option.
Hammam and spa
The spa follows the Tunisian hammam ritual: two wet treatment rooms for the scrub and the soap-foam massage, three massage rooms, a relaxation area and a herbal-tea room. It is a good way to end a day of sightseeing in a city where the hammam is still part of everyday life.
Two places to eat: across the lane and on the roof
The hotel has two restaurants. Dar El Jeld restaurant, directly opposite the hotel, serves Tunisian cuisine and is closed on Sundays. The Rooftop, a bar and restaurant, sits on the terrace above the medina, where breakfast is also served. In the evening the view takes in the white roofs, domes and minarets of the old town.
Location and getting there
The hotel is at 5-10 rue Dar El Jeld, a short walk from Kasbah Square, the seat of government, and at the entrance to the souks. The Zitouna Mosque, the medina's great mosque and a former religious university, is a walk away through the souks; its prayer hall is closed to non-Muslims, but you can see inside from the courtyard. Dar Ben Abdallah, the museum of popular arts and traditions, is also in the medina.
Tunis-Carthage airport is about 11 km from the hotel, around ten minutes without traffic. The hotel runs a shuttle on request at €20 per trip, whatever the number of passengers: it threads through the lanes and drops you at the door, so there is no hunting for the entrance with your luggage. The Bardo Museum, home to one of the largest collections of Roman mosaics, and the ruins of Carthage each make a half-day visit, and the hotel organises excursions to Carthage and Sidi Bou Said. For the city and its sights, see our Tunis page and our guide to sites and museums.
What changes with the seasons
The hotel is open all year. In Tunis, daytime highs are 16-19 °C from December to March and top 34 °C in July and August, so spring and autumn are the best times to walk the medina. During Ramadan, expected from 8 February to 9 March 2027, the medina slows down by day and comes alive in the evening with the Medina Festival; details are in our guide to Ramadan and public holidays 2027.
Prices
Price on request: no rate was published for our reference dates in March 2027. Sabaro passes on the hotel's offer in reply to your request. Tourist tax is extra and paid at the hotel: TND 12 per person per night in 4- and 5-star hotels, about €3.60, and TND 8 in 3-star hotels, for up to ten nights; the amount that applies to this hotel is confirmed with the offer.
Sabaro's view
Who it suits: couples and travellers who have come for the medina, the museums and Carthage, and want a real hotel room and a hammam without leaving the old town.
Highlights: suites of 65 m² and more, rare in a medina; the inner garden; the hammam; the shuttle to the door.
Good to know: there is no pool or beach, and the restaurant is closed on Sundays. For a simpler house more involved in neighbourhood life, see Dar Ben Gacem; for a historic palace, Palais Bayram. More characterful addresses are gathered on our riads and medina houses and boutique hotels pages.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get to Dar El Jeld from the airport?
By the hotel shuttle, booked in advance, at €20 per trip for the whole party. Tunis-Carthage airport is about 11 km from the medina, and the car drops you opposite the hotel on rue Dar El Jeld.
Which suite should I choose?
The Suite Junior (65 m²) is enough for a couple. The 80 m² Suite separates bedroom and living room, which matters on a stay of more than three nights. The Suite Deluxe (95 m²) is the only one that sleeps three adults.
Does the hotel have a pool?
No. It has a hammam, massage rooms and a rooftop terrace. For the sea, Gammarth and its beach hotels are about twenty kilometres away.
Is the Tunis medina safe?
The country has been under a state of emergency since November 2015, and several ministries ask for heightened vigilance throughout; it is best to keep away from demonstrations, which can affect central Tunis. None of the ministries we follow advises against the medina. Country-by-country details are in our Tunisia safety guide.
Should I change money before leaving?
No: the Tunisian dinar can only be exchanged in Tunisia, as importing or exporting it is prohibited. Keep your exchange receipts so you can convert leftover dinars back when you leave. See our guide to money in Tunisia.
