Ramadan 1448 AH is expected to begin in Tunisia on Monday 8 February 2027 and end on Tuesday 9 March 2027, with Eid al-Fitr on Wednesday 10 March. These dates come from astronomical calculations presented by the Cité des sciences in Tunis; the official start of the month is for the religious authorities to decide, and they announce it after sighting the crescent moon.
How the date is set
Saturday 6 February 2027 will be 29 Shaban, the month before Ramadan, the day set aside for looking for the crescent. The new moon falls that day at about 4.56 pm Tunisian time, and the Moon will be below the horizon at sunset, so it cannot be seen. Sunday 7 February should therefore complete Shaban, and Monday 8 February begin Ramadan.
For the end of the month, the same calculations give Tuesday 9 March as the last day of fasting and Wednesday 10 March as the first day of Shawwal, Eid al-Fitr. A difference of one day remains possible, depending on the sighting.
What changes for travellers
During Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. Travel advice gives these pointers:
- In public, avoid eating, drinking, smoking or chewing gum during the day; "particular decency" is expected in dress and behaviour.
- Restaurants and shops: outside tourist centres, restaurants often close during the day and public offices shorten their hours; check shop opening times locally.
- Hotels: those serving food or drink during fasting hours may separate Muslim guests from others, for example with screens.
- Alcohol: sales are banned during Ramadan and it is served in fewer restaurants and bars; these rules do not apply in beach resorts.
- Pace: fasting is tiring, especially in the late afternoon and early evening; patience and tolerance help.
February and March: the season for the south
Ramadan 2027 falls in winter, a good season for the Saharan south. In February the average high is 19.2 °C in Tozeur and 19.4 °C in Kebili, near Douz; in Djerba it is 18 °C, with the sea at 15 °C, too cool for swimming. It is a time for the oases of the Jerid, Douz and sightseeing on Djerba rather than the beach.
Prices for the hotels chosen by Sabaro were found for the nights of 9 to 11 March 2027, spanning the end of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr. Tunisia is on UTC+1 all year round: during Ramadan, it is the same time as Paristhe same time as Brusselsthe same time as Genevathe same time as Luxembourg1 hour ahead of London1 hour ahead of Dublinthe same time as Frankfurtthe same time as Viennathe same time as Amsterdamthe same time as Romethe same time as Madrid1 hour ahead of Lisbonthe same time as Warsawthe same time as Praguethe same time as Stockholmthe same time as Copenhagenthe same time as Oslo1 hour behind Helsinki.
