Al Batinah: Nakhal, Rustaq and the Al Sawadi coast
Al Batinah is the coastal plain north-west of Muscat, between the Hajar Mountains and the Sea of Oman. Visitors come for the forts of Nakhal and Al Hazm, the hot springs of Nakhal and Rustaq, the mountain villages of Wakan and Balad Sayt and the coast at Barka, Al Sawadi and Mussanah, 1 to 1.5 hours from the airport.
Al Batinah works as a day trip from Muscat or as a two- to three-night stay on its coast. This plain north-west of the capital, between the Hajar Mountains and the Sea of Oman, brings together two of the country's finest forts at Nakhal and Rustaq, hot springs that reach 45 °C, terraced villages clinging to the mountainside and a coast of beaches and islets from Barka to Mussanah. Nakhal Fort is 80 km from Muscat airport, under an hour's drive; Rustaq is 117 km away, about 1 hour 20 minutes.
Al Batinah at a glance
Omanis call Al Batinah the country's "belly", for the fertility of its plain of palm groves and farmland. Since 28 October 2011 it has been split into two governorates, Al Batinah North and Al Batinah South, which together cover about 12,500 km² and have some 1.5 million inhabitants, the most populous region after Muscat. Visitors spend most of their time in Al Batinah South, whose seat is Rustaq and which also includes Nakhal, Barka, Wadi Al Ma'awil, Al Awabi and Al Musannah. Al Batinah North, around Sohar, is above all an industrial and port region.
The forts-and-springs loop, stop by stop
A simple circuit leaves Muscat in the morning, heads up to Nakhal, continues to Rustaq and returns along the coast. Times are local.
| Stop | From Muscat airport | Opening hours |
|---|---|---|
| Nakhal Fort | 80 km, under an hour | daily, 8 am-10 pm |
| Al Hazm Fort (Rustaq) | about 117 km, 1 h 20 | Saturday-Thursday 7:30 am-6 pm, Friday 9 am-6 pm |
| Al Sawadi Beach | 75 km, under an hour | open access |
Nakhal: the fort on its rock
Nakhal Fort rises from a large rocky spur above the palm groves and the path to Ain Al Thawarah spring. Its origins go back to pre-Islamic times; it was rebuilt in the 17th century under the Banu Kharous and Ya'aruba imams, then restored several times, most thoroughly in 1990. Its irregular plan follows the rock. On the ground floor are a well, a small mosque and the date stores that let the garrison hold out under siege; upstairs, the wali's (governor's) residence, reception rooms and a watchtower. Six towers ring the fort, which has a single entrance. Climb the towers for the view over the village and palm grove. The fort opens daily from 8 am to 10 pm, with a café on site.
Behind the fort, in the palm grove, Ain Al Thawarah spring brings up warm water that feeds the plantations. An organised half-day from Muscat, fort and spring included, costs from about €48 per person.
Rustaq: Al Hazm and Ain Al Kasfa
Rustaq was once Oman's capital; Imam Ahmad bin Said, founder of the Al Busaid dynasty, is buried here. The town has two forts, Rustaq Castle and Al Hazm Fort.
Al Hazm Fort, built around 1708 by Imam Sultan bin Saif II on flat ground beside Wadi Rustaq, is a masterpiece of Omani military architecture. Its plan is square, its ceilings are stone vaults built without a single piece of timber, and its heavy doors had openings for pouring boiling oil or date syrup on attackers. Two towers, tunnels and secret passages, rooms where the Quran and the sciences were taught, Portuguese and Spanish cannons: it is all there, restored in 1996. Staircases designed for horses lead up to the towers.
Some 1,500 m west of Rustaq Castle, Ain Al Kasfa spring emerges at 45 °C, rich in sulphur. It has the largest flow of any spring in northern Oman, irrigates the surrounding palm groves and is valued locally for its healing properties.
In the mountains: Wakan and Balad Sayt
Above the plain, Al Batinah's villages are reached by mountain roads. Wakan, up to 2,000 m above sea level, is the starting point for old mountain paths now used as hiking trails, walkable all year; our Hajar hiking guide has the basics. Balad Sayt is known for its terraced fields; the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism notes that you need a 4x4 and experience of mountain driving to get there. Our Driving in Oman guide explains what to know before you take the wheel.
From October to March, flash floods can fill wadis within minutes. Check the forecast, avoid wadis when heavy rain is expected and for at least a day afterwards, and, if a flood comes, head for high ground rather than trying to cross. Our Oman wadis guide covers these precautions.
The coast: Barka, Al Sawadi and Mussanah
Oman's Ministry of Foreign Affairs singles out the beauty of the Barka coast, whose islands shelter birds and turtles. The Daymaniyat Islands, the nature reserve where people dive and snorkel, lie off Barka and Seeb; boats leave from Seeb port, and our Muscat page covers the trips.
Al Sawadi Beach, 75 km from the airport, faces a string of islets. Licensed boats run to the main island, an observation tower more than 50 m high looks over the whole bay, and a specialised, licensed team offers paragliding above the shore.
Further north, the wilayat of Al Musannah is, according to the ministry, a water-sports spot. Sur Burj al Khamis, a rectangular 19th-century fort built under Sayyid Said bin Sultan, covers 1,751 m² there, with two towers and a single entrance; it opens daily from 8 am to 5 pm.
Where to stay in Al Batinah
Our selection has two very different hotels in Al Batinah. For a day trip, staying in Muscat is enough: Nakhal is under an hour away.
- For wellness. Al Nahda Resort & Spa, in Barka, about 50 minutes from the airport, sits in 30 acres of a former mango orchard. Its 109 suites and villas are spread through the gardens, and its Uru spa builds a personal programme with a consultant on arrival: ten treatment rooms, yoga, Ayurveda (traditional Indian medicine) and light spa cuisine. Check-in 2 pm, check-out noon, local time. Price on request.
- For a family beach holiday. Barceló Mussanah Resort, 99 km from the airport, is a four-star resort: 234 rooms and 74 apartments, four sea-facing pools, a 1,200 m² water park, a private beach, three restaurants and an optional all-inclusive plan. Its spa is for over-18s only. Rates start at about €120 a night for two, breakfast included; local taxes may be extra. When we checked, Barceló's own site showed the hotel as "temporarily unavailable", though it could still be booked for March 2027 elsewhere: Sabaro confirms it is open before every booking.
Sohar and Al Batinah North
Sohar, about 200 km from Muscat, is the main town of Al Batinah North. An old copper port that tradition names as the birthplace of Sinbad the Sailor, it is now one of Oman's main industrial hubs, with a free zone, a seaport and an airport. Foreign ministries do not all give the same advice for Al Batinah: some advise against the areas around military, energy, port and industrial sites, naming Sohar, others against travel to the whole country, and others call for heightened vigilance throughout Oman. Yours is in the "Travel advice" table on this page; our Oman and the regional situation guide has the details. As everywhere in Oman, photographing military and sensitive sites is forbidden.
When to go
The season runs from October to April, as in Muscat, whose coastal-plain climate Al Batinah shares: 25 to 27 °C from December to February, above 35 °C from May to September.

Frequently asked questions
Can you see Nakhal and Rustaq in a day from Muscat?
Yes. Nakhal is under an hour from the airport and Rustaq about 1 hour 20 minutes. Leave in the morning and you can visit both forts and a hot spring, then return along the coast.
Can you bathe in the hot springs?
Organised trips to Nakhal include a dip in the warm water of Ain Al Thawarah, behind the fort. Ain Al Kasfa in Rustaq emerges at 45 °C; it irrigates the palm groves and draws visitors for its healing properties.
Do you need a 4x4 in Al Batinah?
Not for the forts, springs and coast, which organised tours reach by bus. The village of Balad Sayt, however, requires a 4x4 and mountain-driving experience.
Which hotel should I choose in Al Batinah?
Al Nahda Resort & Spa in Barka for a wellness stay in large gardens; Barceló Mussanah Resort for a family beach holiday, with its water park and all-inclusive option.
Is Al Batinah affected by travel advice?
It depends on your country: some foreign ministries advise against the area around Sohar's port and industrial zone, in Al Batinah North, others against the whole country, and others call for heightened vigilance throughout Oman. The "Travel advice" table on this page gives your country's advice.
