Oman visa and entry requirements: 14 days free, then an eVisa

Depending on nationality, entry to Oman can be free for up to 14 days, with a stamp on arrival and a passport valid for 6 months. Beyond that, you need an eVisa, OMR 20 for 30 days. Some medicines require a prescription, and entry by road from the UAE follows its own rules.

Checked on 20 October 2026

The rule: 14 days free on arrival

For a stay of up to 14 days, nationals of countries exempted by Oman have nothing to arrange before departure: border police stamp a free entry stamp on arrival, which serves as a visa. Governments do not all describe it in the same words, a visa "obtained free of charge on arrival" or a "visa-free" stay; it is the same scheme.

Oman set out the scheme in law this summer: a decision by the Inspector General of Police and Customs, published in Official Gazette No. 1659 on 2 August 2026 and in force the next day, created a free 14-day tourist visa category, granted on request to nationals of countries designated by the authorities, according to Oman's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The list of countries was not published with the decision; the latest known Omani list of countries exempt from a visa for 14 days dates from 2023.

The German foreign office says a visa issued on arrival cannot be extended beyond 14 days; the Omani decision of 2 August 2026, however, allows it to be replaced by a paid tourist visa before it expires. For a trip of more than 14 days, the safest option is to apply for an eVisa before you travel.

What depends on your nationality

Rules change: always check the official website before you travel.

Governments do not all count the 6 months of passport validity from the same date, arrival or departure from Oman. Sabaro recommends a passport valid for at least 6 months after your return date, which satisfies every reading.

A few details:

Beyond 14 days: the eVisa

Visas are issued online on the Royal Oman Police website, evisa.rop.gov.om. Fees given by France Diplomatie, the travel advice service of the French foreign ministry:

VisaLengthPrice
Tourist visa, single entrystay of up to 30 daysOMR 20 online, OMR 21 on arrival at Muscat airport
Visit visa, multiple entryvalid 1 year, stays of up to one monthOMR 50 online

The eVisa is valid for one month from issue, so France Diplomatie suggests applying within the month before departure. The UK recommends applying online before travelling, choosing the "unsponsored visit visa" option as a tourist, to avoid refusal. One Omani rial is worth USD 2.6008.

Overstaying costs OMR 10 a day, up to a maximum of OMR 500 according to the UK, payable before you leave, at the airport if need be. The authorities may also detain overstayers.

Transit and cruises

For a connection at Muscat airport, no visa is needed if you hold a ticket for your onward flight and stay in the international transit area; to leave the airport you need a visa, according to the German foreign office. Cruise passengers are exempt from a visa for shore visits of up to 48 hours.

Health and medicines

No vaccination is required for a direct trip from Europe. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required, from the age of 9 months, from travellers arriving from a risk country, including after more than 12 hours in transit there; Oman also counts Rwanda and Tanzania among those countries.

Medicines call for care. According to France Diplomatie, many medicines, such as sleeping pills and antidepressants, are treated as narcotics in Oman unless accompanied by a prescription translated into Arabic and less than three months old; you should also carry only the quantity needed for your stay. Germany lists painkillers, antidepressants and other psychotropic drugs, and recommends a multilingual doctor's certificate. The UK warns that some prescription and over-the-counter medicines sold in Europe are illegal in Oman and refers travellers to Oman's Ministry of Health. Sabaro recommends checking every treatment before you leave and keeping medicines in their original packaging, with the prescription.

Customs: what you can bring

Omani customs allow each traveller, duty free:

  • 400 cigarettes;
  • for non-Muslim travellers, 2 litres of wine and 48 cans of beer;
  • gifts worth up to OMR 300.

Cash, bearer instruments, precious metals and gemstones worth OMR 6,000 or more must be declared on arrival and departure.

According to the German foreign office, all luggage is X-rayed and may be searched. Weapons, fresh food, especially pork, and pornographic material may not be imported; videos may be held for inspection. E-cigarettes and vaping products are banned, both to import and to use, according to the UK. A drone only clears customs with a licence, applied for on the flyserb.com platform for leisure use; without one it is confiscated, and flying without authorisation carries up to a year in prison and an OMR 10,000 fine, according to France Diplomatie. A drone in transit can stay in checked baggage. On departure, taking archaeological, geological or marine finds out of the country is an offence.

Entering by road from the UAE, and Musandam

Oman has several land crossings with the United Arab Emirates. For Musandam, the Omani peninsula separated from the rest of the country by the UAE, they are Al Darah, from Ras Al Khaimah, and Dibba, at the Wam post, from Fujairah. France Diplomatie lists these conditions:

  • a passport valid for at least 6 months;
  • being the holder of the insurance of the vehicle crossing the border: hire cars are no longer allowed into Musandam;
  • a fee of AED 30, payable by card only.

Visa rules change as you cross from one country to the other. A single-entry Omani visa does not allow you back into Oman after a trip to the UAE, Germany points out. To reach Musandam by road from the rest of Oman, crossing the UAE, an eVisa must be multiple-entry; otherwise a new 14-day stamp is issued at the border. In the other direction, entry to the UAE follows its own rules, which also depend on nationality; an ordinary passport valid for at least six months is required, and temporary passports are refused. A hire car crossing into the UAE must also be insured there. Border crossings can close at short notice.

Several governments advise against Musandam, in different forms. Foreign ministries do not all give the same advice. Here is your country's:
