Fusion as a signature
Gnaoua music, created by descendants of enslaved people brought from sub-Saharan Africa, was long practised on the margins before being recognised; UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) added it to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019. The festival has played its part since it began in 1998, giving the maalems an international stage.
Its hallmark is the encounter. Each edition pairs maalems with jazz, blues, rock, reggae or traditional musicians from elsewhere, in concerts created for the occasion. Pat Metheny, Marcus Miller, Joe Zawinul and Maceo Parker have shared the stage with Gnaoua musicians.
The festival is produced by the agency A3 Communication, working since 2009 with the Yerma Gnaoua association, founded by maalems and the festival's initiators, which helped secure the UNESCO listing. It reports more than 400,000 festival-goers over three days. Alongside the concerts, the Human Rights Forum brings together thinkers and artists for two days, and the Arbre à Palabres ("palaver tree") offers a meeting space for audiences and musicians.
Eight venues in a small town
During the festival, the whole medina plays. The venues fall into three groups.
- The main stages. The Moulay Hassan stage, on the square of the same name, is the heart of the festival: just follow the crowd. The beach stage usually hosts headliners in solo concerts, from funk and soul to hip-hop and reggae.
- Borj Bab Marrakech, a bastion in the ramparts now used for exhibitions, hosts residencies and fusion concerts, in an area reserved for ticket holders.
- Lilas, or Gnaoua night ceremonies, for small audiences, in venues across the medina: Bayt Dakira, the town's house of Jewish-Muslim memory; Dar Souiri, a 19th-century riad turned cultural centre; the Issaoua and Sidna Bilal zaouias, brotherhood lodges; and the former Danish consulate. Photos and video are not allowed.
Tickets, passes and badges
The official site sells several options.
- Main-stage passes give access to the area in front of the Moulay Hassan stage or the beach stage. A pass bought online must be exchanged for a badge and wristband at the collection point in the Moulay Hassan car park, open from 11:00 to 23:00 local time from the day before the festival; the confirmation email is not enough. E-tickets can be used directly.
- Intimate concerts cost 250 dirhams per evening in 2026 and are sold only at the festival's official shop in Essaouira. Seats are limited: Sabaro recommends buying them as soon as you arrive.
- For families: unaccompanied children under 12 are not admitted to the areas in front of the stages.
Passes and tickets are non-refundable.
Living the festival
Staying in the medina means doing everything on foot, day and night. L'Heure Bleue Palais, near Bab Marrakech, is steps from the Borj; Riad EspritBleu, adults only, is on Rue d'Agadir, 700 m from the beach. Le Jardin des Douars, in the hills south of town, offers calm after the concerts; plan on a driver for the evenings. The town is full during the festival: Sabaro recommends booking several months ahead.
Wind and cool evenings surprise visitors arriving from Marrakech. In Essaouira, the average June high is 21.4 °C and the average low 17.1 °C, according to the 1991-2020 normals of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), and the trade winds blow often: bring a sweater or jacket for evening concerts and closed shoes for the crowds.
Getting there. Essaouira is about 2 h 30 by road from Marrakech; the coach takes 2 h 30 to 3 h. Sabaro's "Marrakesh and Essaouira in 7 days" itinerary fits easily around the festival dates.
