The Bodrum peninsula
The Bodrum peninsula in south-west Turkey lies 38 km from Milas-Bodrum Airport, served in summer by direct flights from a dozen European cities. St Peter's Castle and the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus in town, the bays of Türkbükü, Gölköy, Torba and Yalıkavak around it: people come from May to October for a sea at 23 °C in June and 26 °C in August.
The Bodrum peninsula juts into the Aegean in south-west Turkey, facing the Greek island of Kos. At its south-eastern tip, Bodrum town climbs around two bays and its castle. Around it, a string of resort villages share the coast: Torba, Türkbükü and Gölköy to the north, Yalıkavak and its marina to the west, Gümüşlük at the tip, Bitez and Turgutreis to the south. This is where Turkey's luxury hotels outside the all-inclusive model are concentrated: Sabaro's selection here runs to seventeen.
A season from May to October
Bodrum lives by the summer. Most of the big hotels open in April or May and close at the end of October; a few, such as The Marmara Bodrum on the hill above town, stay open in winter.
The 1991-2020 normals for Bodrum weather station tell the story: an average high of 26.6 °C in May, 32.1 °C in June, over 35 °C in July and August, then 31.2 °C in September and 26.4 °C in October. It barely rains from June to August; most of the 700 mm a year falls between November and February. The sea warms from about 20 °C in May to 23 °C in June and 26 °C in August, and stays above 23 °C in October.
June and September combine a warm sea with bearable heat. July and August are the hottest and most expensive months. During religious holidays Turkish holidaymakers pour in: in 2027, the Feast of the Sacrifice falls on 16-19 May.
Getting to Bodrum
Milas-Bodrum Airport (code BJV) is 38 km from town, about forty minutes by road, and 54 km from Yalıkavak, just under an hour. Turkish Airlines links it with Istanbul Airport, while Pegasus and AJet fly from Sabiha Gökçen on the Asian side.
In summer, direct flights arrive from Paris, London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo: the peninsula is then 3h35 from Paris by direct flighta few hours' flight from Europe's main cities, direct or with one stop. These are seasonal: out of season you connect through Istanbul.
On the peninsula you get from bay to bay by car or taxi, and by boat when the sea allows.
Bodrum town and its castle
St Peter's Castle
The castle guarding the harbour was built in the 15th century by the Knights of St John, the Hospitallers. It houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, devoted to the wrecks and cargoes recovered off the coast. From 1 April 2027 admission costs €22, audio guide included, according to the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism tariff.
The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus
In antiquity Bodrum was Halicarnassus. The monumental tomb of Mausolus, completed around 350 BC, was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and gave its name to every mausoleum since. Only the foundations and fragments remain, displayed in a site museum. Admission is €5 from 1 April 2027.
The Zeki Müren Museum
The house of singer Zeki Müren, a major figure of Turkish music, is now a museum: stage costumes, a bronze statue and his 1976 Buick. Tickets cost €5 from 1 April 2027.
If you plan several visits, the "The Aegean" Museum Pass, priced at €75 from 1 April 2027, covers the museums and sites of İzmir, Aydın, Muğla and Denizli provinces for seven days, Ephesus and Pamukkale included.
The peninsula's bays and villages
Türkbükü, Gölköy and Torba: the north coast
The north coast is the most sheltered and the most sought after. Türkbükü and Gölköy share one bay; this is where you find Maçakızı, Kuum, Flamm and Bodrum Loft. Further east, on Cennet Koyu bay, the Mandarin Oriental spreads over a large hillside estate. Torba, the closest to town, is home to Susona and Casa Dell'Arte.
Yalıkavak and the marina
To the west, Yalıkavak has grown around its marina, with its restaurants and shops. Allium, Birdcage 33, 4reasons and the MGallery sit on the hills above or a few minutes' walk from the harbour; The Bodrum EDITION is on neighbouring Dirmil bay, and Avantgarde Refined on Küdür bay to the south.
Gümüşlük, ancient Myndos
At the western tip, Gümüşlük is a fishing village built on the site of Myndos, an ancient Dorian colony. From mid-July to early September, the Gümüşlük International Music Festival puts on classical concerts there.
By boat
The easiest way to see the coves is from the sea. A day cruise along the Bodrum coast with lunch on board sells from about €42 per person; a trip to Orak Island from about €31. Dives leave from Bodrum from about €80. A gulet cruise (the traditional wooden sailing boat of this coast) to the Gulf of Gökova is done by the week, either by the cabin or chartering the whole boat.

Safety
None of the European foreign ministries Sabaro follows advises against the Bodrum peninsula. Several ministries flag summer forest fires on the Aegean coast: lighting a fire or dropping a cigarette in a risk area is punishable by a fine or even prison. A red flag means no swimming. Several ministries also warn about methanol-adulterated alcohol: buy from official outlets. The Safety table on this page gives the advice for your country.
