Dubai city and beach in 7 days

The idea: city first, sea second

In Dubai, the city and the beach are not in the same place. The towers, souks and museums lie between the Creek and Downtown; the beaches and big resorts are along Jumeirah, Palm Jumeirah and the Marina. Rather than crossing the city every day, this trip splits it in two: two nights in town, while you still have the energy of arrival, then four nights by the water, where you barely move.

It works from October to April. The sea ranges from 21.8 °C in February to 28.3 °C in November, and average air highs stay below 31 °C from November to March, according to World Meteorological Organization (WMO) climate normals. November, warm in the water and out of it, and March to April, milder, are the best beach months.

Two days in town at The Lana

The hotel

The Lana opened in 2024 and belongs to the Dorchester Collection. Foster + Partners designed the building and the Paris studio Gilles & Boissier its interiors. It sits on the Marasi Bay marina in Business Bay, a few minutes from Downtown and Dubai Mall and around 20 minutes by car from Dubai International Airport (DXB). Its rooftop infinity pool faces Burj Khalifa and is open to hotel guests from 7 am to 6 pm local time. Downstairs, Jara is the restaurant of Spanish chef Martín Berasategui, and Riviera that of French chef Jean Imbert. Rates were found from about €580 a night for a double room in March 2027, with any per-night tourism tax on top.

Day one: Downtown

Dubai is a few hours' flight from Europe's main cities, direct or with one stop, and the city is on UTC+4 all year, 4 hours ahead of London in winter and 3 hours ahead in summer. The first day is spent Downtown. The At the Top observatory on levels 124 and 125 of Burj Khalifa is booked by time slot, found from about €45 per person; the sunset slot is the most popular. At the foot of the tower, the Dubai Fountain performs every 30 minutes from 6 pm to 11 pm local time, free to watch from the lakeside.

Day two: the Creek

Old Dubai is about ten kilometres away. The guided tour listed in this trip lasts 3 hours: the Al Fahidi quarter and its wind-tower houses, a crossing of the Creek by abra, the wooden public boat, for 1 dirham, then the spice and gold souks of Deira. It was found from about €14 per person. In the afternoon, head back to the hotel roof, or visit the Dubai Frame, the 150-metre frame in Zabeel Park between the old city and the new.

The Museum of the Future is closed; it is due to reopen in the first quarter of 2027.

Crossing to the coast

On day three you cross the city westwards. Jumeirah Zabeel Saray is on the western crescent of Palm Jumeirah, the palm-shaped artificial island, about 31 km from central Dubai according to the hotel. Allow around 40 minutes by car, depending on traffic.

Four days by the water at Jumeirah Zabeel Saray

The hotel

Zabeel Saray has a kilometre of private beach on the crescent, an infinity pool facing the sea and a separate children's pool. Its Talise Ottoman Spa covers 8,200 m² on two levels, with 42 treatment rooms, three hammams and two indoor thalassotherapy pools. There are around ten restaurants and bars, including Al Nafoorah and the Zenzi Beach bar, and a kids' and teens' club. Rates were found from about €485 a night for a double room in March 2027, with any per-night tourism tax on top.

What to do with four days

Mostly nothing but beach, spa and pool. If you want to leave the hotel, three ideas nearby:

Burj Al Arab, visible from Kite Beach, can only be admired from outside: the hotel is closed for an 18-month restoration and is due to reopen around October 2027, restaurants and tours included.

An evening in the desert

On day four or five, a car picks you up from the hotel in the afternoon for the evening safari, a 7-hour outing in all: about 45 minutes of 4x4 driving over the dunes, sandboarding, a short camel ride, then a barbecue dinner in a desert camp with a show. It was found from about €58 per person. Serious accidents on dune buggies and quad bikes are frequent, and a 4x4 driven by a recognised operator is safer, which is the format used here.

On day seven, DXB airport is about 40 minutes by car from the hotel.

The sea from autumn to spring

In January and February the sea feels cool if you are after really warm water; November and April suit swimmers better.

Beach rules and safety

• Swimwear is for the beach and the pool, not the streets.
• Rip currents can form on all beaches: swim only on supervised beaches, never under a red flag.
• Serious jet-ski accidents are frequent: a life jacket for every passenger and checked insurance.
• Dubai has opened three public beaches for night swimming, at Jumeirah 2, Jumeirah 3 and Umm Suqeim 1, lit and supervised from sunset to sunrise.
