A camp on two levels

Inara Camp, formerly known as Agafay Camp, spreads across a vast plot of the Agafay desert, facing the Atlas. The camp has two levels. Up top, the restaurant also welcomes visitors from Marrakesh for lunch. Below, the bivouac gathers the 19 tents and suites for overnight guests, all looking out over the desert.

The owner, Vincent Jaquet, designed the decor himself. Exploration is the theme: Moroccan crafts, everyday objects put to new uses, pieces of wood and iron gathered in the countryside, stone and shades of brown. The tents have been fully renovated, with discreet thermal and sound insulation, reversible air conditioning and, according to the Michelin Guide, a wood stove in each. All have a king-size bed, a lounge area and a separate bathroom with a hot shower and toilet; electricity runs around the clock.

Which tent to choose

Categories range from a simple tent to a suite with a hot tub. The choice comes down mostly to outdoor space.

  • Discovery Tent (25 m², renovated in 2026): double bed or two singles, bathroom and separate toilet. For a first night in the desert as a couple, possibly with a baby under 3.
  • Emotion Tent (30 m²): tadelakt shower (a smooth, waterproof lime plaster) and private terrace. For a couple.
  • Emotion Suite: tadelakt bathroom, open-air shower and sunny terrace.
  • Inara Suites (no. 2 and no. 3): for two adults and two children, with an 18 m² wooden terrace and an outdoor shower in addition to the one in the bathroom. For a family or friends.
  • Agafay Suites (78 m²): large living room, bedroom, bathroom with two showers, and a 40 m² wooden terrace with a private hot tub. Up to two adults and two children.
  • Suite Romance, no. 19 (50 m²): large living room, 40 m² terrace with a private hot tub facing the Atlas, one king-size bed. For a honeymoon.

Sabaro recommends an Emotion Tent for a night for two, and Suite 19 or an Agafay Suite when the hot tub matters: in winter, it transforms an evening under the stars.

Two pools in the middle of the desert

The camp has two pools. The heated Desert Lagoon overlooks the canyon; it is built on the "bio-design" principle, from sand and quartz cast in a porous resin. Water soaks into the material, which feels like a sandy beach, and its shape suggests a natural spring, an oasis around which the camp might have settled. This is the place for sunset. The second, the large infinity pool, is surrounded by a stone terrace, wooden pergolas and a bar.

Dinner in "the circle"

Dinner is served in "the circle", the camp's communal space, around the campfire and by candlelight. The restaurant team comes from the Sahara, in southern Morocco. The cooks use local produce, including vegetables from a nearby permaculture farm that guests can visit.

The same house runs Le Soukoune, a restaurant for day visitors: ten private tents with a butler, La Rotonde, a shared dining room seating 30, and every evening Gnawa musicians (a musical brotherhood of sub-Saharan origin), henna tattoos and fire-eaters.

Activities

Activities are run with local companies committed to a code of ethics: labour law, insurance, no child labour, equality between women and men; the animals are monitored by a vet. Camel rides leave from the camp for 30 minutes, at sunrise, during the day or at sunset; the "Ode to the sun" ride lasts 45 minutes before 11 am and ends with mint tea. Quad and buggy rides, with a private guide, are recommended in the morning from May to September. E-bikes follow the tracks of the reg (stone desert) and the nearby eucalyptus forest. There is also a pottery workshop with a master potter and a photo shoot in a long, wind-blown dress.

Sabaro's view

Who it suits: couples, honeymooners, families with children, travellers who want a night in the desert without a long drive or discomfort.

Strengths: two pools, including the heated Desert Lagoon; suites with a private hot tub; a place in the Michelin Guide selection.

Good to know: the camp has no dedicated children's facilities, and the pools are unfenced; the restaurant also welcomes day visitors.

Our advice: arrive mid-afternoon (tents are available from 4 pm) to enjoy the Desert Lagoon at sunset, then book the next morning's activity before leaving, as check-out is at noon.

Frequently asked questions

How long from Marrakesh airport?

Marrakesh-Menara airport is 34 km away, about 50 minutes. You get there by taxi or by a private transfer arranged by the camp, at extra cost; you do not need a car on site.

Are children welcome?

Yes, of any age. Families of three or four book an Inara or Agafay Suite, which can take an extra bed or a cot. The camp has no dedicated children's facilities and the pools are unfenced.

When to go, and are the tents heated?

The camp is open all year; spring and autumn are the mildest seasons, and summer can reach 40 °C. Each tent has reversible air conditioning and thermal insulation, and the Desert Lagoon is heated, so you can swim in winter.

Can we come just for lunch or dinner?

Yes: the upper part of the camp welcomes visitors for lunch, and Le Soukoune, a restaurant run by the same house, serves lunch and dinner in private tents or at La Rotonde, with a shuttle from Marrakesh.
