Above the blue town, with a garden
Dar Echchaouen stands on the Ras El Ma road, in the El Onsar quarter, between the spring that supplies the town and the foot of the Rif mountains. The house blends Andalusian and Moroccan architecture: exposed brick, wooden beams, carved bedheads.
Its setting sets it apart from the two riads in Sabaro's selection, which are inside the medina: here there is space. A garden, a sun terrace, a seasonal outdoor pool with a children's section and, from the restaurant as from many rooms, a view over the blue houses and the mountains. The Ras El Ma spring is 300 m away; Bab el Ain and the kasbah are five to ten minutes' walk; the Spanish mosque, for sunset, is 1 km away.
The restaurant serves Moroccan food, tagines, couscous and pastilla, looking over the town. Breakfast, Moroccan and international, is included in most rates.
Room, junior suite or chalet
Group size decides it, and each category is roomier than the last. For a couple, a junior suite with a balcony over the town has the best view. For a family of four, the chalet is the answer: two bedrooms, a lounge with a fireplace and a private terrace over the medina and the Rif.
Arriving by car
This is the house's other asset: free parking, guarded 24 hours a day, while the medina itself is explored on foot. Be aware, though: since early 2026 some guests report that the access road is damaged or closed, and that the last stretch has to be walked. The hillside house also has many steps. Before arrival, ask the hotel where to park and whether someone can carry your bags.
Sabaro's view
Who it suits: families, and travellers with a car who want a pool, a garden and parking, within walking distance of the old town.
Strengths: the garden and the pool with a children's section; the view over the medina and the Rif; the two-bedroom chalet; a 4.5/5 rating from over 900 Tripadvisor reviews, with the Travelers' Choice 2026 label.
Good to know: access has been disrupted since early 2026; there are many steps; the pool only opens in the warm season; pets are not accepted.
