Salalah and the western coast
Salalah, the capital of Dhofar in southern Oman, has been advised against by some European foreign ministries since 2026; others do not name it. The city is known for the khareef, the June-to-September monsoon, and for Al Baleed, a medieval port listed by UNESCO as part of the Land of Frankincense.
Salalah lies on the Arabian Sea, a 1 h 35 flight south of Muscat, and is the capital of Dhofar, Oman's southernmost governorate. Some European foreign ministries advise against travel there. Sabaro therefore describes the region for information only, with your country's advice, and offers no trip ideas while that advice stands.
Official travel advice
Foreign ministries do not all give the same advice for Salalah: some advise against the area, others only against the surroundings of ports and strategic sites, others do not name it, and a few cover Oman as a whole. Yours is in the "Travel advice" table on this page; our guide to the situation in Oman follows how it changes.
The monsoon that empties the Gulf
The khareef is the south-west monsoon. From June to September it wraps the plain and mountains of Dhofar in mist and drizzle. Salalah's average high drops from 32.8 °C in May to 27.1 °C in August, while most of Arabia bakes above 40 °C, and the sea cools from 29 °C to below 24 °C. Hills turn green and springs fill up.
The visitors are mostly Oman's neighbours. The official 2026 season ran from 21 June to 21 September with 125 cultural and sports events. Between 21 June and 31 August 2025, Dhofar received 1,027,255 visitors according to Oman's National Centre for Statistics and Information: 734,225 Omanis, 179,246 nationals of other Gulf states and 113,784 visitors of other nationalities. Three in four came by road.
Europeans tend to come in winter. From October to March the average high stays between 27.5 and 31 °C, with the sea at 25 to 27.5 °C.
Frankincense heritage in the city
The Land of Frankincense has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2000. It brings together four Dhofar sites linked to the trade in frankincense, the resin of the Boswellia sacra tree: the caravan oasis of Shisr (Ubar) and Wadi Dawkah on the desert road, the ancient port of Sumhuram to the east, and Al Baleed in Salalah itself.
Al Baleed was a working port from the 8th to the 16th century. Its ruins now form an archaeological park by the sea, home to the Museum of the Frankincense Land. Wadi Dawkah, where frankincense trees are still tapped, lies on the Thumrait road north of the city and is covered on our Empty Quarter page.
Around the city
Salalah spreads across a coastal plain backed by the Dhofar mountains. It holds the international airport, the hotels and the starting points for day trips east to Taqah, Mirbat and Wadi Darbat and north to the desert. Jebel Ittin overlooks the city; its Atin Square is the main stage for khareef evening events. Two springs are close by: Ain Sahalnoot, which flows all year and is easy to reach, and Ain Jarziz, in a forest, busy in summer.
West of the city, the coast road runs to Al Mughsail, a 6 km white-sand beach. When the sea is slightly rough, water shoots up through holes in the rock; Al Marnif Cave looks down on these blowholes. Further on, the Shaat viewpoint looks out over the cliffs of the west coast. All of these are described by Oman's Ministry of Heritage and Tourism on its official portal, experienceoman.om, and local tours link them in a half or full day.
