A trip in four settings

This honeymoon alternates the pace: three slow days by the sea to unwind, two days in the cool of the mountains, a night in the desert for the highlight, then a final beach night before the flight. Distances are short: about two hours' drive from Muscat to Jebel Akhdar, a little more to the Wahiba.

From October to April the coast sees average highs of 25 to 35 °C, with the sea between 24 and 30 °C. On the Jebel Akhdar plateau, at 2,000 m, highs are 12 to 17 °C from December to March, so evenings by the fire are part of the trip.

The moments of the trip

Three days at The Chedi

The Chedi Muscat, opened in 2003 in Ghubra, spreads over 21 acres of water gardens, with three pools including The Long Pool, a private beach and a 13-room spa. The 49 m² Deluxe Club Terrace Rooms have a private terrace or balcony and access to the club lounge. The Grand Mosque is about ten minutes away by car: non-Muslims can visit from Saturday to Thursday, 8 to 11 am local time, in modest dress, and women cover their hair. The Royal Opera House, opened in 2011, offers guided tours from Saturday to Thursday, 8:30 am to 5:30 pm.

One evening, the sunset kayak tour included in this trip lasts two hours, from around €22 per person.

Two days on the canyon rim

The road up Jebel Akhdar passes the Birkat al Mouz police checkpoint, where only 4x4 vehicles are allowed; the hotel offers transfers. Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar sits on the edge of a canyon at 2,000 m. Its 188 m² One Bedroom Cliff Pool Villas have an infinity pool on the cliff edge. The spa has two couples' treatment rooms, a hammam and an aromatic sauna. The hotel organises canyon sunrises, dinner at Diana's Point, stargazing and rose-water outings. From late March to early May, it is rose season in the villages nearby.

A night in the Wahiba

The Sharqiya Sands, also known as the Wahiba, cover about 10,000 km² of dunes. The camp collects guests at the edge of the sand, as the track is 4x4 only.

At Thousand Nights Camp, the air-conditioned sand house is the most comfortable option, and the Ameer tents have a private terrace. In the evening: a camel ride at sunset, dinner at the camp restaurant and stargazing. The camp serves no alcohol. For an even more secluded night, Canvas Club sets up a private camp with its own cook for a single couple or party, without electricity; its price is on request.

The next morning, the sunrise balloon flight included in this trip takes off around 5 am local time, with pick-up from the camp. It lasts 40 minutes and starts from around €310 per person, with a minimum of two tickets.

A last night at Jumeirah Muscat Bay

Jumeirah Muscat Bay, opened in 2022, fills a sheltered cove at Bandar Jissah between mountains and sea, 15 minutes from central Muscat and 40 minutes from the airport. It has three pools, one of them adults-only, a private beach and the 10-room Talise spa. Its Summerhouses and the Sanctuary villa come with a private pool and a butler.

Good to know for couples

  • Alcohol is served only in licensed venues, such as hotels and restaurants, from age 21; it is banned in public, beaches included. The desert camp does not serve it.
  • Dress covers shoulders and knees in public places; swimwear is worn only at pools and on tourist beaches.
  • Regional situation. Since the Iranian strikes in the Gulf, foreign ministries have not all given the same advice; the Oman travel situation guide has the details. Yours:

Your country's advice is shown in the box at the top of the page.

Each area has its own page: Muscat, Jebel Akhdar and Wahiba Sands. The honeymoon theme brings together other hotels made for two.

Frequently asked questions

Why only one night in the desert?

Because one night is enough for the sunset, the starry sky and the balloon at dawn, and a camp is simpler in comfort than the trip's hotels.

Can we have a villa with a private pool?

Yes, at the Anantara, in the Cliff Pool Villas on the cliff edge, or at Jumeirah Muscat Bay, in the Summerhouses. The recorded price is for the cheapest room.

When is the best time for a honeymoon in Oman?

From October to April. In December and January the sea is cooler, around 24 to 26 °C, and mountain nights are cold.

Is the balloon flight open to everyone?

It is for ages 12 and over. It leaves before dawn, so let the camp know the evening before.

Can we drink champagne in the desert?

Not at Thousand Nights Camp, which has no licence. Alcohol is served only in licensed venues, such as the bars of the large hotels.
