Sofitel Cairo Nile El Gezirah is a tower on the southern tip of Gezira Island, in the middle of the Nile and the middle of Cairo. Every one of its 433 rooms and suites has a balcony, looking out over the river or the city. The hotel is run by Sofitel, the luxury brand of the French hotel group Accor, and the Michelin Guide includes it in its hotel selection. It suits travellers who want to stay central, with Tahrir Square and the Egyptian Museum within walking distance, and come back in the evening to a pool and terraces on the water. The pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum are about 16 km away by road.
A tower on the tip of the island
Gezira is Cairo's largest island in the Nile. Its built-up northern third is Zamalek, the district of embassies, galleries and cafés, a name that also covers the whole island; the greener south holds the Cairo Opera House, Cairo Tower and the sports clubs. The hotel sits at the very southern end, where the river divides around the island, so the upper floors look over both channels of the Nile, the feluccas (traditional Nile sailing boats) and the rooftops of downtown.
French designer Pierre-Yves Rochon redid the hotel from top to bottom in November 2007, blending Pharaonic and Arabian motifs with French Art Deco. The Club Millésime lounge is on the 16th floor.
Central Cairo on foot
This is the address's strong point: you can walk across to downtown. The Cairo Opera House and its metro station are just north of the hotel on the same island. Over Qasr el-Nil Bridge, Tahrir Square is about 1.5 km away, a walk of around 20 minutes, and the Egyptian Museum about 2 km. Cairo Tower and its viewing deck are about 1.3 km to the north.
Everything else means a car. Khan el-Khalili and historic Cairo are about 5 km away, ten minutes or so when traffic allows. The Great Pyramid and the Grand Egyptian Museum, which sit next to each other, are about 16 km away: around 20 minutes when the roads are clear, and much longer at rush hour. Sabaro's advice: leave early for Giza, keep a day for downtown and historic Cairo, and book a car with a driver for days off the island. Our guide to getting around Egypt covers taxis, ride-hailing apps and drivers, and Visiting the Grand Egyptian Museum covers tickets and time slots.
Seven places to eat and drink by the Nile
The restaurants open onto the Nile promenade at the foot of the tower. Two of them are the reason to stay in for dinner:
- Kebabgy is a Cairo institution for charcoal-grilled meats and bread fresh from the clay oven, served on a riverside terrace to the sound of takht musicians (a small ensemble playing classical Arabic music); noon to midnight;
- La Palmeraie serves Moroccan food, pastilla, tagines and couscous, in an Arab-Andalusian setting with live music, mint tea and shisha (water pipe); chef Hassana Regui has a background in Moroccan cooking; 6:30 pm to 2 am.
The others cover the rest of the day:
- Le Sud, Mediterranean cooking, tapas, pasta, paella and wood-fired pizza, also serves the breakfast buffet;
- La Madeleine, the lobby café, for French pastries, 9 am to 3 am;
- Window on the Nile, a colonial-style library lounge with ceiling fans, for afternoon tea and cocktails, 10 am to 2 am;
- Atelier Lounge, burgers and sushi, 6 pm to 3 am;
- Sunny Bar, the pool bar, for juices, salads and sandwiches, 9 am to 7 pm.
Our Food and dining page lists the hotels in our selection where the table matters as much as the room.
Pool, spa and Club Millésime
The outdoor pool is heated, with an infinity edge level with the Nile, among palm trees and hammocks; it is open from 8 am to 5 pm. Sofitel Spa, open 10 am to 10 pm, has a hammam, a sauna, a steam room and a large whirlpool behind a glass wall that looks onto the pool and the river. Its menu focuses on Egyptian rituals: Cleopatra's Secret, with a scrub, massage and facial, and the Nubian Hammam, with olive-oil soap. There is also a hair salon, and the Technogym-equipped gym is open 24 hours with views of the Nile. Our Spa and wellness page brings together the other spas in our selection.
Club Millésime is the lounge for Club rooms and suites, on the 16th floor. It serves breakfast from 7 to 11 am, afternoon tea from 3:30 to 5:30 pm, wine tasting and evening drinks from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, and refreshments until 11 pm. Check-in and check-out are handled there, spa access is included (treatments extra), and check-out can be pushed back to 4 pm, subject to availability.
Choosing a room
All the rooms measure 32 m², so the choice comes down to the view: partial Nile views from Premium rooms, full views from Luxury rooms and panoramic views from Magnifique rooms. For a couple out sightseeing all day, a Luxury room is enough; the version with Club Millésime access is worth the extra for quiet breakfasts and evening drinks. Junior and Prestige Suites double the space to 64 m², with a separate bathtub; the Opera Suite measures 84 m² and the Imperial Suite 150 m².
With children
For a family of four, the 150 m² Family Suite has two bedrooms, one with a king bed and one with two singles, around a shared living room with panoramic Nile views. Rooms take up to three people: an extra bed for a child aged 3 or over costs 50 USD (about 45 €) a night, and a baby cot can be requested. Babysitting is available on request. Our Family page lists the child-friendly hotels in our selection.
How it compares in Cairo
Of the hotels in our Cairo selection, the Sofitel is the only one on Gezira Island, and the closest to the Opera House and Zamalek. Four Seasons Nile Plaza, in Garden City, and Fairmont Nile City, north of downtown, are on the east bank with pools high up; the Sofitel's pool is at river level. To stay at the foot of the pyramids, Marriott Mena House is less than 1 km from the plateau. For a four-night stay, Sabaro suggests two nights in Giza followed by two by the Nile, as our Cairo and Giza page explains. Our Museums and culture page brings together hotels close to the great museums.
Good to know
Check-in is at 3 pm and check-out at noon. Cairo International Airport is about 21 km away, around 20 minutes when the roads are clear; Sphinx Airport, west of Giza, is about 46 km away. The hotel has a 150-space covered car park with valet service, at a charge. Pets are not allowed. Our Egypt visa guide covers entry requirements.
