Pera Palace is Istanbul's great historic hotel. Construction began in 1892 and it opened in 1895 to welcome passengers of the Orient Express, the luxury train of the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits. It has lived through the reigns of three sultans, the fall of the Ottoman Empire, two world wars and the birth of the Turkish Republic, without leaving its hill in Tepebaşı above the Golden Horn.
A century of stories
The architect Alexandre Vallaury gave it a neoclassical façade and, inside, a great oriental-style domed salon, the Kubbeli salon. Pera Palace was Istanbul's first modern hotel with electricity, and the first to install an electric lift, complete with a lift boy.
Its guests made its legend. Agatha Christie stayed often from 1926 to 1932: her favourite room, 411, now bears her name, and the hotel says she may have written Murder on the Orient Express there. Ernest Hemingway stayed after the First World War, when he was a reporter. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk used room 101 several times between December 1915 and October 1917; it became a museum of his personal belongings in 1981.
The rooms
The hotel offers some fifteen room and suite types, several named after famous guests. The two Deluxe rooms are the same size, and the view is what sets them apart: for a couple, the Golden Horn side, usually with a French balcony, is the one to choose. Crime-fiction fans will ask for the Agatha Christie Room, number 411; families, for a triple room.
Dining, tea and hammam
The hotel's restaurants and bars blend French, Italian and Turkish cuisine, starting with Agatha Restaurant. The Kubbeli Lounge, under its dome, hosts afternoon tea with piano accompaniment. The open-air Orient Terrace is open from 9 am to 2 am local time, and the Patisserie de Pera serves as an intimate lounge. Pera Palace Spa offers hammam rituals, with kese scrub and foam wash, and massages with natural oils.
Location
The hotel stands on Meşrutiyet Caddesi in Tepebaşı, in the Pera, Galata and Golden Horn area. İstiklal Avenue and Galata Tower are a few minutes' walk away; the old city lies across the Golden Horn. Istanbul Airport (IST) is about an hour's drive away without traffic.
Rates
In October 2026, for two nights from 1 to 3 June 2027, the official website offered the Deluxe Pera View Room at €352 a night for two adults, €704 for the stay, room only and non-refundable, including taxes and fees.
