Crowne Plaza Duqm is a business hotel, and Sabaro chose it for want of anything better: no leisure hotel of a comparable standard was found in Duqm or along the coast of Al Wusta, Oman's central province. Opened in April 2013, it has 213 rooms, including 21 suites, on Duqm beach, near the commercial port and the dry dock. Crowne Plaza is a brand of the British hotel group IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group).

Current situation: some European foreign ministries advise against travel to the Duqm region, or only near its port and industrial sites. They do not all give the same advice. Yours:

Your country's advice is shown in the box at the top of the page.

Our guide Oman and the regional situation covers this advice in detail. This page describes the hotel for information; Sabaro offers no trip ideas for Duqm while this advice stands.

A hotel for a port town

Duqm is a port and industrial town on the Arabian Sea, home to a special economic zone. Most of its hotel guests come on business, and the Crowne Plaza was designed for them: a 780 m² event centre with two ballrooms, a boardroom, a business centre and four meeting rooms.

Yet the hotel has what passing leisure travellers look for: it sits on the beach, with an outdoor pool, and the rooms have balconies. Guests rate it highly: 9.0 out of 10 on Booking.com (369 reviews) and 4.8 out of 5 on Tripadvisor (596 reviews).

Rooms

All rooms have a balcony. The Standard room looks onto the pool or the sea; the Premium room, the same size, guarantees a sea view. The Junior Suite, on the beach side, adds space for a couple or a small family, and a Royal Suite completes the range.

Dining and facilities

  • Souq: all-day restaurant.
  • Al Safi: fish and seafood.
  • Splash: poolside snacks.
  • Frontier Bar.

There is also an outdoor pool and a gym.

Getting to Duqm

  • By air: Duqm airport is about 27 km from the hotel, half an hour by road; the flight from Muscat takes about 1 h 15.
  • By road: about 530 km from Muscat International Airport, close to 7 hours' drive. For driving in Oman, see our guide driving in Oman.

Around Duqm

The region is described on our page Duqm and the Al Wusta coast. The sights closest to the hotel:

  • Duqm Rock Garden, a field of rock formations listed among Oman's major geological sites, about 16 km away.
  • Duqm beach, in front of the hotel.
  • Ras Madrakah, about 80 km south, with pale sand, rocks and seabirds.
  • The Al Wusta oryx reserve, reached by 4x4 (four-wheel-drive vehicle) with a permit obtained in advance; it was removed from UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2007.

Photos and drones

Duqm is a port and an industrial zone. Photographing military sites, sensitive installations or any damage is prohibited in Oman. Flying a drone requires a licence from the official platform flyserb.com, or the drone may be confiscated.

Frequently asked questions

Why did Sabaro choose a business hotel?

Because no leisure hotel of this standard was found in Duqm. The Crowne Plaza is on the beach and very well rated by its guests.

Is the hotel on the sea?

Yes, on Duqm beach. Premium rooms look out to sea and Junior Suites over the beach.

How do you get there from Muscat?

By air to Duqm airport (about 1 h 15), then half an hour by road; or about 530 km by road, close to 7 hours.

Can you photograph the port?

Photographing sensitive and military installations is prohibited in Oman, so it is best not to photograph the port or industrial sites. Drones require a licence.

What do foreign ministries advise?

It depends on the country: some advise against travel to the Duqm region, others only near its port and industrial sites, and others do not name the town. Your country's advice is shown at the top of the page. See our guide Oman and the regional situation.
