The dates

Ramadan of the Islamic year 1448 is expected to begin around Monday 8 February 2027 and run until around Monday 8 March, according to the UAE Astronomy Centre. The lunar month begins when the crescent moon is sighted: Oman fixes its dates by its own sighting and sometimes starts a day after the UAE, so the official date is only known the evening before. The end of the fast is celebrated with Eid al-Fitr, around 9 and 10 March.

What changes for visitors

Muslims fast from dawn to sunset. The rules on public behaviour apply to everyone, travellers included:

  • no eating, drinking, smoking or chewing gum in public in daytime, including in your car;
  • no loud music or dancing;
  • modest dress, required by a decree of the Ministry of Religious Affairs: shoulders and knees covered, for men and women alike;
  • restaurants outside hotels close during the day, and opening hours are shorter.

In Oman, Ramadan is observed strictly and intensely, and shops stay closed until sunset. Hotels keep serving their guests, so that is where you eat during the day, discreetly.

Travelling during Ramadan

February and early March are still excellent months weather-wise: in Muscat average highs are 26 °C in February and 30 °C in March, with the sea around 24 °C. Plan sightseeing for the morning, check opening hours for sites and souks, and choose hotels with their own restaurants.

Resort stays suit the period well. In Muscat, The Chedi Muscat, the Mandarin Oriental Muscat and Jumeirah Muscat Bay all have several restaurants on site. In the mountains, Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar, on the Saiq Plateau at 2,000 m, has several restaurants and a heated pool. Prices are recorded including taxes, with any local taxes on top.

The guide to travelling in Oman during Ramadan covers the rules and practical tips in more detail.

Around Ramadan

Just before, IRONMAN 70.3 Muscat is raced on 6 February 2027. Just after, the Jebel Akhdar rose season begins in late March. The regional situation is worth following: foreign ministries do not all give the same advice, and the Oman travel situation guide has the latest. Yours:
