When Eid al-Fitr falls in 2027
Eid al-Fitr, the "festival of breaking the fast", marks the first day of the month of Shawwal, which follows Ramadan. According to the UAE Astronomy Centre, it should fall on Tuesday 9 March 2027 if the crescent moon is sighted on the evening of the 8th, and on Wednesday 10 March if not.
In Oman these dates remain estimates: the country sets the start of each lunar month by its own moon sighting, sometimes a day after the UAE. The Eid public holidays are announced separately by the government.
What it means for travellers
During the Eid holidays government offices close and Omanis and residents are on holiday. Three tips:
- book early for hotels and car hire if your trip covers the public holidays;
- check opening hours of museums and forts, which may change over the holidays;
- keep to the Ramadan rules until the official announcement that it has ended: while the fast lasts, nobody eats or drinks in public in daytime.
Once Ramadan is over, normal life resumes and restaurants reopen during the day.
A good time to travel
In early March the coast is still at its best: an average high of 30 °C in Muscat and the sea around 25 °C. In the Hajar Mountains, Saiq, on the Jebel Akhdar plateau at 2,000 m, averages a high of 17 °C. A few weeks later the rose season begins, running from late March to early May.
For Eid, beach hotels in Muscat such as The Chedi Muscat or Kempinski Hotel Muscat, from around €410 to €440 a night for arrival on 9 March 2027, the expected day of Eid, and mountain hotels such as Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar, from around €450, suit the period well. Prices are recorded including taxes, with any local taxes on top.
