Expected dates
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, which moves back by about eleven days each year. For the year 1448 of the Hijri calendar, astronomical forecasts reported by the Emirati press place its start on Monday 8 February 2027. It lasts 29 or 30 days, and Eid Al Fitr, the festival that ends it, will fall on Tuesday 9 or Wednesday 10 March. The exact dates depend on the sighting of the crescent moon and are confirmed the evening before.
What changes for visitors
According to the official UAE portal, non-Muslims are not required to fast. A few points of etiquette apply during the day:
- in public, avoid eating, drinking, chewing gum and smoking, including in your car;
- dress more modestly, with shoulders and knees covered;
- loud music and dancing in public may be frowned upon.
To eat during the day, malls and their food courts set aside separate areas, and many Dubai restaurants stay open for those who are not fasting. Others close during the day and all reopen at iftar.
Opening hours shift: the working day is two hours shorter, malls close late, and some sites change their hours; the Dubai Frame, for instance, opened from 10 am to 7 pm during Ramadan 2026. Tourist sites and leisure parks stay open during the day. At sunset, when the fast is broken, taxis become scarce.
Ramadan evenings
Ramadan is also a festive month once evening falls. At sunset the iftar cannon, Midfa Al Iftar, a tradition dating back to Sheikh Zayed, the UAE's founder, signals the breaking of the fast; it can be heard 8 to 10 km away. Then comes iftar, the meal that breaks the fast:
- free iftars in mosques and Ramadan tents are open to everyone, according to the official portal;
- Hai Ramadan at Expo City Dubai offered iftars on Al Wasl Plaza at its last edition, from 5 pm to 10 pm local time; the 2027 programme has not been published yet.
