A tournament steeped in history

Founded in 1989, the Dubai Desert Classic was the first DP World Tour event, the European professional golf tour, to be played in the Gulf. It bills itself as the region's longest-running professional tournament and belongs to the Rolex Series, the tour's richest events.

Its roll of honour speaks for itself: Seve Ballesteros in 1992, Ernie Els three times, Fred Couples, José María Olazábal, Tiger Woods in 2006 and 2008, Henrik Stenson, Sergio Garcia, Bryson DeChambeau. Rory McIlroy holds the record with four wins, in 2009, 2015, 2023 and 2024, and is also the youngest winner, at 19. American Patrick Reed won the 2026 edition. The course record, 61, has belonged to Ernie Els since 1994.

The 38th edition runs from Thursday 21 to Sunday 24 January 2027 on the Majlis Course at Emirates Golf Club. McIlroy is expected, chasing a fifth trophy.

The Majlis Course

The Majlis is the main course at Emirates Golf Club, which has a second one, the Faldo; both are described in our golf theme.

Getting there: by metro

There is no public parking at the club during the tournament, and the organisers recommend public transport. Al Fardan Exchange station on the red metro line, formerly Al Khail, is right outside the club entrance. Taxis and ride-hailing cars drop off nearby.

Where to stay

The club is a few minutes from the hotels of Dubai Marina and Bluewaters: Banyan Tree Dubai gives 8 km and 13 minutes to Emirates Golf Club. On JBR beach, The Ritz-Carlton, Dubai and Address Beach Resort are also close, with the tram and then the red metro line running to the club. The area is described on our Dubai Marina page.

In late January the average high is 24.4 °C and the low 15.3 °C: ideal weather for walking the course, with a jumper for the morning. The Dubai Marathon is run on 17 January, the week before, and the Dubai Shopping Festival ends the same day.
