Datça and Bozburun

The Datça peninsula in south-west Turkey separates the Aegean from the Mediterranean. People come for Knidos, an ancient city open every day, for the lanes of Old Datça and for coves, nine of which hold the Blue Flag. The nearest airport, Dalaman, is 2 h 30 away by road; the sea reaches 26.6 °C in August.

East of Bodrum, a narrow peninsula stretches westwards: the Datça peninsula, which Turks also call Reşadiye. Its north coast lines the Gulf of Gökova, its south coast faces the Mediterranean. At its tip, on Cape Tekir, the ancient city of Knidos marks the point where the two seas meet. Further east, the Bozburun peninsula, cut into bays, is home to the villages of Bozburun and Selimiye.

There are no big resort complexes here: villages, olive groves, almond trees and coves, some reachable only by boat. Life moves slowly, and that is the point.

Getting there

The peninsula is at the end of the road. The nearest airport is Dalaman (code DLM), 167 km from Datça, about 2 h 30 by road, and 147 km from Bozburun, about 2 h 20. Milas-Bodrum (BJV) is 202 km from Datça, nearly 3 hours.

Dalaman has flights from Istanbul with Turkish Airlines, Pegasus and AJet, and in summer many direct flights from the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.

From Bodrum the drive is 234 km, about 3 h 20. The ferry from Bodrum to Körmen, on the peninsula's north coast, shortens the trip by crossing the Gulf of Gökova; check its timetable for your travel date.

Between Datça and Bozburun allow 87 km and about 1 h 15: the two are close as the crow flies, but the road winds round the bays.

Knidos, the city with two harbours

Knidos is the peninsula's great sight. Strabo, the Greek geographer, called it a "double city": one part on the mainland, the other on the former island of Kap Krio. The sea between them was filled in to create two harbours, the small northern one for warships, the larger southern one for trade. The tower of the north harbour and the remains of its breakwater can still be seen.

The city follows the grid plan of Hippodamus of Miletus, the architect who gave his name to this layout: four broad east-west streets crossed by a steep north-south street, with stairs at the junctions. The ground rises in terraces. On the mainland are the acropolis, the walls, the sanctuary of Demeter and the great theatre; to the west, the Round Temple terrace and, just below, the Apollo terrace, where the festival of Apollo Karneios was held. Seven churches, a Hellenistic villa, an odeon and a bouleuterion (council chamber) complete the site.

Knidos is open daily from 8:30 am to 6 pm local time; the ticket office closes at 5:30 pm. From 1 April 2027 admission is €6. The site is very exposed: in summer, go early in the morning with water and a hat.

Old Datça and Reşadiye

Above Datça harbour, Eski Datça (Old Datça) is a village of cobbled lanes, stone houses draped in bougainvillea, small shops and cafés. The poet Can Yücel lived here for almost thirty years, and his house is part of the walk.

In the upper quarter of Reşadiye, which gave the peninsula its other name, the Mehmet Ali Ağa konak (Ottoman mansion) dates from the early 19th century. It served as a tobacco warehouse, a cinema, a school and a wedding hall before being restored in the early 2000s. Its "Baş Oda", the former room of honour, keeps woodwork and paintings dated 1831. The mansion is now the only hotel in Sabaro's selection in the area, and offers guided tours on certain days.

A peninsula of coves and almond trees

The peninsula is known for its almonds, an important source of income for local growers. It is also home to most of the 154 species of wild orchid recorded in Turkey.

Along the coast, nine beaches and coves hold the Blue Flag, the international bathing-water label. Several coves can only be reached by boat.

To the east, Bozburun and Selimiye are two villages on the neighbouring peninsula, on a coastline deeply cut into bays.

The climate

Datça weather station (1991-2020 normals) records an average high of 25.6 °C in May, 30.6 °C in June, 33 °C in July and 33.3 °C in August, then 29.9 °C in September and 25.5 °C in October: slightly cooler than Bodrum at the height of summer. Almost all of the 687 mm of annual rain falls between November and March.

The sea is the warmest on the Aegean coast: 22.9 °C in June, 25 °C in July, 26.6 °C in August and still 23.7 °C in October.

The best period is June to October for swimming. May and October suit walking and visiting Knidos without the worst of the heat.

Where to stay

  • Mehmet Ali Ağa Konağı: the historic mansion in Reşadiye, 18 rooms, 5 in the konak and 13 stone rooms in the garden, breakfast included. Price on request: rooms for June 2027 are not yet on sale.

For luxury beach hotels, the Bodrum peninsula is about 3 h 20 away by road, or less via the Körmen ferry.

Safety

None of the European foreign ministries Sabaro follows advises against Datça or Bozburun. Several ministries flag summer forest fires on the Aegean coast: lighting a fire or dropping a cigarette in a risk area is punishable by a fine or even prison. A red flag means no swimming. The Safety table on this page gives the advice for your country.
