Al Husn Hotel Muscat is Muscat's hotel for couples: 180 rooms and suites for guests aged 16 and over, set on a clifftop above a private cove in the Barr Al Jissah beach complex, south-east of the capital. Al Husn means "the fortress" in Arabic. Long known as Shangri-La Al Husn, the hotel changed operator at the start of 2026.

What changes in 2026 and 2027

  • Since 1 January 2026, the Shangri-La group no longer runs the Barr Al Jissah complex. Hilton took over its three hotels and announced it on 5 January 2026: Al Husn now trades under the interim name Al Husn Hotel Muscat, the former Al Waha has become DoubleTree by Hilton Muscat Al Waha, and the former Al Bandar is now Hilton Muscat Al Bandar.
  • After renovation work announced for 2027, Al Husn is due to join Waldorf Astoria, Hilton's top luxury brand. Neither the dates nor the scope of the work had been published by October 2026, when the hotel was still taking bookings for March 2027.
  • What this means for you: restaurant names and some services may have changed under the new operator, and a 2027 stay could coincide with the works. Before every booking, Sabaro checks with the hotel that it is open and free of building work on your dates.

Booking sites and maps sometimes still show the old name, Shangri-La Al Husn.

An adults-only hotel

Guests must be 16 or over, and the person checking in must be at least 18. It is the only hotel in the complex without young children, which makes it the choice for honeymoons and couples looking for calm (see adults only and honeymoon). Families go to the DoubleTree next door.

The cove and the cliff

The private beach fills a small cove at the foot of the cliff; above it, the infinity pool looks out over the Gulf of Oman. Kayaks, pedal boats and snorkelling gear are complimentary. The complex has its own PADI dive centre (PADI being the international diver training organisation), runs dolphin-watching trips and supports a turtle care project (see diving).

The Luban Spa, named after the Arabic word for frankincense, has 4 treatment rooms and a gym. Al Husn guests can also use the facilities of the complex's two other hotels, and the tennis courts. A daily shuttle runs to central Muscat and Muttrah Souq.

Rooms

Every room has a private balcony and a bathroom with separate shower and bath, a separate toilet with bidet, and a walk-in wardrobe.

What sets the rooms apart is mainly the view: the pool from the Deluxe Room, the Gulf of Oman from the sea-view Deluxe, the honeymoon pick, and the widest panorama from the Premier Room. For a longer stay, the sea-view suites add a separate living room; the largest has a jacuzzi on its terrace.

Where to dine

Tour operators list six venues, some of whose names date from the Shangri-La era: Sultanah; Shahrazad, a Moroccan restaurant; Aangan, an Indian restaurant; Al Muheet Pool Bar & Restaurant by the pool; Mahhara Beach Bar on the beach; and the Lobby Lounge.

Price

In October 2026, for a two-night stay in March 2027, the cheapest room cost about €425 a night for two adults, breakfast included, taxes and fees included, with any local taxes extra.
