Kars kept from its long Russian period churches and stone buildings that give it a European look. Kar's Otel occupies one of these buildings, in the town centre, on Halitpaşa Street. Its fit-out was worked out in detail, from the lobby to the bathrooms and down to the names of the rooms: a simple, elegant decor where white dominates, right through to the restaurant.
Eight rooms, three suites
The hotel has only eight rooms: five standard rooms and three suites. They bear the names of the historic districts of Kars province and of the Aras river.
The standard rooms, all with a king-size bed and goose-down duvets, change their dominant colour from floor to floor; they are enough for a couple. For a longer stay, the Aras Suite adds a fireplace and, above all, a large terrace over the old streets of Kars. The Arpaçay Suite, under the roof, combines two connecting bedrooms: it is the best choice for families with children.
Room service runs 24 hours a day. The website does not publish room sizes.
Kars and Ani from the hotel
In the centre, the citadel overlooks the town, and the Caucasus Front War History Museum occupies one of the 1803 bastions. Kars Museum, free to enter, shows finds from Ani.
The site of Ani, a medieval city on the UNESCO World Heritage List, is 47 km away, about 40 minutes by road: its 4,500 m of walls and its churches stand above the river that marks the Armenian border. The hotel also recommends Lake Çıldır and the Sarıkamış ski resort. The Kars and Ani page covers the whole region.
Season
Kars stands at 1,777 m. Summer is short and mild, with 26 to 27 °C in the afternoon in July and August; winter is long, with nights around −15 °C in January, the season of snow and skiing at Sarıkamış. That is when the Aras Suite and its fireplace come into their own.
