Key facts

According to NASA's calculations, the longest totality is 6 minutes 23 seconds, reached in the desert west of the Nile, north-west of Luxor. Luxor lies almost on the centre line, with the Sun high in the sky, about 82° above the horizon.

PlaceLocal timeDuration of totality
Luxoraround 13:05about 6 min 20 s
Nile cruise between Luxor and Kom Omboaround 13:05 – 13:08about 6 min, depending on the boat's position
Marsa Alamaround 13:08varies with the exact spot
Tangieraround 8:47about 4 min 50 s
Tetouan, Chefchaouenaround 8:47shorter than in Tangier

Times and durations calculated by Sabaro from NASA's path table, which ignores the profile of the Moon's limb: actual durations may differ by a few seconds. Local time: Egypt on summer time (UTC+3), Morocco on GMT (UTC+0).

Where to see it

  • Luxor: the best accessible place, with totality close to the maximum.
  • Nile cruise: the river is inside the path of totality from Luxor to Kom Ombo. Aswan lies just south of the limit and only sees a partial eclipse.
  • Red Sea: Marsa Alam is inside the path. Hurghada, El Gouna and Soma Bay are north of the limit and only see a partial eclipse.
  • Northern Morocco: Tangier, Tetouan and Chefchaouen are inside the path. Fes and Rabat are south of the limit.

Good to know

  • Protect your eyes: outside totality, only look at the Sun through glasses meeting ISO 12312-2 (the international standard for solar viewing filters). Remove them during totality only.
  • Heat: Luxor and the Nile Valley are very hot in August. The eclipse happens in the early afternoon, the hottest time of day: plan for shade and water.
  • Accommodation: the event draws travellers from all over the world. Eclipse tours are already on sale, and Luxor's hotels and boats are likely to fill up well in advance.

Frequently asked questions
