# Istanbul, Pera, Galata and the Golden Horn

Pera, Galata and Karaköy form the north shore of the Golden Horn, facing Istanbul's old city. Visit Galata Tower, open until 10 pm, İstiklal Avenue, Galataport and the Fener and Balat neighbourhoods, and stay in an 1895 grand hotel, a former bank, an 1842 school or the old imperial shipyards.

Across the Galata Bridge from Hagia Sophia, the hill of Galata and the plateau of Pera were for centuries the quarter of Istanbul's European merchants: a Genoese colony in the Middle Ages, then the district of embassies, banks and grand hotels at the end of the Ottoman Empire. Today it is the district of Beyoğlu, the city's liveliest in the evening, with its cafés, galleries, cinemas and rooftop bars.

The best way to discover it is on foot, walking up from the waterfront at Karaköy to Taksim Square, then back down towards the Golden Horn.

## From Karaköy to the tower

At the foot of the hill, **Karaköy** was the port district. It has been redeveloped along the Bosphorus with the **Galataport** promenade, and its lanes have filled with cafés and galleries. Bankalar Caddesi, Banks Street, the former Voyvoda Street, lines up the façades of the late-Ottoman financial houses: one of them, built in 1876, is now a hotel.

Stepped streets then climb to **Galata Tower**. The Genoese built it in the mid-14th century as part of their colony's walls; under the Ottomans it served as a prison, then as a fire lookout. It is now a museum run by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, open daily from 8:30 am to 6:30 pm local time, then for evening visits from 6:30 to 10 pm. Under-18s must come with their parents. The evening visit shows the old city lit up.

A little higher, on Galip Dede street, the former lodge of the whirling dervishes is now the **Galata Mevlevi Lodge Museum**: €8 from 1 April 2027.

## İstiklal Avenue and Taksim

At the top of the hill begins **İstiklal Avenue**, a cobbled pedestrian street more than a kilometre long, served by the small red "nostalgic" tram. It is lined with covered arcades (Çiçek Pasajı, Atlas Pasajı), cinemas and theatres, Galatasaray High School and old consulates, and ends at **Taksim Square** and its Monument of the Republic.

At Tepebaşı, below the avenue, the Pera Palace, opened in 1895 for Orient Express passengers, overlooks the Golden Horn. The district also hosts Istanbul's international film, music, theatre and jazz festivals every year.

## On the Golden Horn: Fener, Balat and the shipyards

The **Golden Horn** is the horn-shaped inlet that separates Galata from the old city. It was the harbour of the Byzantine and then the Ottoman fleets, and its shores keep the old imperial shipyards of Taşkızak, where a hotel opened in 2025 in the arsenal workshops.

Further along, on the old-city shore, **Fener and Balat** were home for centuries to the Orthodox Christian and Jewish communities. Their sloping streets of colourful houses are full of cafés, second-hand shops and antique dealers; some cafés turn into impromptu auction rooms. Allow half a day, by taxi or boat from Galata.

## A visit to the hammam

In Tophane, at the bottom of Galata, the **Kılıç Ali Paşa hammam** was built by the architect Sinan, who also designed the Süleymaniye. Packages cost from 3,000 to 5,500 Turkish lira per person in May 2026, about €55 to €100.

## Where to stay: six addresses selected by Sabaro

The district has Istanbul's most varied hotels. Sabaro has selected six, each for a different kind of stay.

- **[Pera Palace Hotel](/en/hotels/pera-palace/)**, for history: the Orient Express grand hotel, opened in 1895, with Agatha Christie's room 411 and Atatürk's museum room.
- **[The Peninsula Istanbul](/en/hotels/peninsula-istanbul/)**, for waterfront luxury: four buildings on the Bosphorus at Karaköy, two pools and chef Fatih Tutak's rooftop restaurant.
- **[Aliée Istanbul](/en/hotels/aliee-istanbul/)**, for wellbeing: 99 rooms in the old shipyards on the Golden Horn, a 4,000 m² spa and nine restaurants and bars.
- **[The Bank Hotel Istanbul](/en/hotels/bank-hotel-istanbul/)**, for architecture: an 1876 bank on Banks Street with five-metre ceilings, a hammam and a rooftop bar.
- **[Ecole St. Pierre Hotel](/en/hotels/ecole-st-pierre/)**, for intimacy: an 1842 school at the foot of the tower, with remains of the Genoese walls in the courtyard.
- **[Georges Hotel Galata](/en/hotels/georges-hotel-galata/)**, for the view: 20 rooms 50 m from the tower and a French rooftop restaurant facing the Bosphorus.

Travellers who want to sleep next to the great monuments should look instead at the [historic peninsula](/en/turkey/istanbul-historic-peninsula/), across the bridge.

## Getting to Galata

Istanbul Airport (IST) is 44 km from Galata Tower, about an hour's drive without traffic; Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), on the Asian side, is 42 km away, about 45 minutes. Traffic can double these times. Istanbul is a few hours' flight from Europe's main cities, direct or with one stop. Sultanahmet is 4 km away, an easy walk across the Galata Bridge.

## What the foreign ministries say

None of the European foreign ministries followed by Sabaro advises against this district. Several call for heightened vigilance throughout the country, and some recall the İstiklal Avenue attack of November 2022. The ministries also warn about the bar scam, notably in Beyoğlu: a friendly stranger suggests a drink and the bill turns out to be huge. Decline invitations from strangers and keep away from demonstrations. The Safety table on this page gives the advice for your country.

## When to come

Average highs in Istanbul range from 17 °C in April to 27 °C in June, close to 30 °C in July and August, then 21 to 26 °C in September and October. Spring and autumn are best for walking the steep streets; in summer, the rooftop terraces take over in the evening.
