# Surfing

Morocco's Atlantic coast can be surfed from El Jadida to Dakhla, with Taghazout, north of Agadir, at its heart: beaches for learning from May to August, point breaks for experienced surfers from October to March. Sabaro selects hotels with their own surf school or lessons on site.

For Sabaro, surfing means Morocco. Its Atlantic coast receives the ocean swell, with sandy beaches for beginners and rocky point breaks for experienced surfers. In Egypt, board sports are sail-powered, kitesurfing or windsurfing, on the lagoons of the Red Sea: the Kitesurfing page covers them.

## The coast, from north to south

- **El Jadida and Oualidia.** On the ocean side, Oualidia's beach suits surfing and windsurfing, while the lagoon stays sheltered for swimming. A stop rather than a surf destination.
- **Safi.** The town has a famous wave, Garden: a powerful, hollow right-hander that forms long barrels, only works with a big winter swell, preferably at low tide, and only really breaks a few days a year. It is for experienced surfers.
- **Essaouira.** The bay has its schools, but the wind blows hard one day in two: it is first of all a kitesurfing and windsurfing town. Surfers make the most of the calmer days.
- **Imsouane.** North of Taghazout, the bay offers a long right-hander over sand, suited to beginners and to those who want to progress; it draws many schools and can be very crowded.
- **Taghazout and Imi Ouaddar.** The heart of Moroccan surfing, about twenty kilometres north of Agadir. Beginners go to Panorama Beach, K14 (Imourane) or Crocro; Banana Point and Anza suit intermediates; Anchor Point, Killer Point and Dracula are for experienced surfers.
- **Mirleft and Sidi Ifni.** South of Agadir, a wilder coast, where most beaches are unsupervised and the wind often raises big waves.
- **Dakhla.** On the Atlantic side of the peninsula, Westpoint is a well-known surf spot, and Lassarga, a fishing village at the southern tip, is known to surfers: a day of waves between kitesurfing sessions on the lagoon.

## Your level sets the season

In Taghazout, you choose the season according to your level. From October to March, the winter swells are at their most powerful: this is point-break season, when beginners stay on the easy beaches, with an instructor. From May to August, the sea is calmer and the mood more beach-holiday, the right time for a first lesson and for families.

The water ranges from 16.5 °C in February to 20.6 °C in September: a wetsuit is needed all year. Schools provide it with the board.

## A week of surfing

Sabaro recommends at least two days to get a taste of surfing, and a week to really progress, with a lesson every morning and the afternoon free.

- **For surfing and yoga in the same hotel**, Paradis Plage, in Imi Ouaddar, on a 5 km beach. Its Surf House, run in partnership with the Rip Curl brand, gives 1 h 30 of lessons a day, board and wetsuit included: 665 Moroccan dirhams (MAD) for 2 days, 1,575 MAD for 5 days, prices listed in October 2026. Experienced surfers can go on guided trips to the spots along the coast. The shala, a yoga room open to the ocean, holds three classes a day. It is the base for Sabaro's trip idea "Surf, yoga and spa in Taghazout, 7 days".
- **For the comfort of a large hotel**, the Fairmont Taghazout Bay, which organises lessons for all levels, with a spa, kids' and teens' clubs, and the Tazegzout golf course five minutes away. At Taghazout Bay, the Surf Tadenga academy, opened in 2016 facing the ocean, also has a kids' club.
- **For the village atmosphere**, a guesthouse in Taghazout itself, from where you walk to the water.

Agadir airport is 40 to 45 minutes by road: book the transfer with your accommodation. On days without waves, Paradise Valley, with its gorges and natural pools, is about an hour's drive away, and sandboarding is done on the dunes of Tamri or Taboga.
