# Eastern Dhofar: Taqah, Wadi Darbat, Mirbat

Eastern Dhofar runs along the coast east of Salalah, with Taqah Castle, the UNESCO-listed ancient port of Sumhuram, Wadi Darbat and the port town of Mirbat. It can only be reached by road from Salalah, which some European foreign ministries advise against.

Eastern Dhofar starts where Salalah ends and follows the Arabian Sea coast: Taqah, the ancient site of Sumhuram 40 km from the city, Wadi Darbat up in the hills, then Mirbat and Sadah. The only way in is the coast road from Salalah, which some European foreign ministries advise against. This page describes the region for information only and offers no trip ideas while that advice stands.

## Which travel advice applies

Foreign ministries do not all give the same advice for eastern Dhofar: some advise against the Salalah area without drawing its boundary, while eastern Dhofar can only be reached through the city; some ask for appropriate security measures away from the coastal strip, which includes Wadi Darbat and the Jebel Samhan plateau; others do not name this coast. Yours is in the "Travel advice" table on this page.

The one warning every ministry shares concerns wadis, dry valleys that turn into torrents after rain: never enter one when rain is possible. See our guides to the [situation in Oman](/en/guides/situation-oman/) and to [Oman's wadis](/en/guides/wadis-oman/).

## Along the coast road

**Taqah** is the first stop east of Salalah. Its castle has reopened after restoration: the prison and reception hall on the ground floor, the watchtowers and the quarters of the wali, the local governor, upstairs.

**Khor Rori and Sumhuram.** Forty kilometres east of Salalah, the ancient city of Sumhuram sits on a hill above Khor Rori, a freshwater lagoon. The port was active from the 4th century BC to the 5th century AD and tied to the frankincense trade. It is one of the four sites of the Land of Frankincense, inscribed by UNESCO in 2000, alongside Al Baleed in [Salalah](/en/oman/salalah/) and Wadi Dawkah and Shisr on the road to the [Empty Quarter](/en/oman/empty-quarter/).

**Wadi Darbat.** Just past Taqah, a road climbs to Wadi Darbat, a mountain valley above Khor Rori. The khareef, the summer monsoon, fills a string of small lakes that sometimes hold water all year; to the south a natural dam of tufa, a limestone laid down by water, closes the valley. A large picnic area draws families. The spring of **Ain Razat**, with open spaces around it, is another popular outing.

**Mirbat.** The castle looks down on the old harbour and the souk; it was rebuilt under Sultan Said bin Taimur. It opens daily from 8 am to 7 pm local time, with tickets on site and guided tours on request. Boat trips for dolphin watching or snorkelling leave from Mirbat or Salalah.

**Sadah.** Further east, Sadah Castle is the easternmost fortification on the Dhofar coast.

## Seasons

During the khareef, from June to September, the hills turn green and Wadi Darbat's lakes fill up. It is Dhofar's high season, driven by visitors from Oman and the Gulf; in 2026 the season's events extended to Taqah, Mirbat and Sadah. In winter, from October to March, the coast stays warm: in Salalah, the reference station for the region, average highs range from 27.5 to 31 °C and the sea from 25 to 27.5 °C.

## Where to stay

The Sabaro selection has one hotel here, **[Alila Hinu Bay](/en/hotels/alila-hinu-bay/)**, opened in 2021 by Alila, Hyatt's luxury brand. It stands at the edge of Mirbat between Samhan mountain and the sea, about an hour to an hour and a quarter by road from Salalah airport. It has 112 rooms and villas, 16 of them with private pools, an infinity pool facing the bay, an adults-only pool, a spa and a private beach, with diving on nearby coral reefs. For a March 2027 stay, the rate checked on 20 October 2026 starts at around €210 a night for two with breakfast, any local taxes extra.

The region's other hotels are in Salalah and listed on the [Salalah page](/en/oman/salalah/).
