# Duqm and the Al Wusta coast

Duqm is a port and industrial town on the Al Wusta coast of central Oman, about 1 h 15 by air from Muscat. Some European foreign ministries advise against travel there, or only against the area around its port and industrial sites. Nearby are the Rock Garden, Ras Madrakah, the pink beaches, Bar Al Hikman and the oryx reserve.

Duqm sits on the Arabian Sea roughly halfway between Muscat and Salalah, in the governorate of Al Wusta. It is above all a port and industrial hub, with an airport 1 h 15 by air from Muscat. Around it, the coast and the interior hold unusual landscapes: rock formations, seasonal lagoons and white dunes. Some European foreign ministries advise against travel there, so this page gives information only, with no trip ideas while that advice stands.

## Official travel advice

Foreign ministries do not all give the same advice for Duqm: some advise against the area, others only against the surroundings of the port and industrial sites, and others do not name it. Yours is in the "Travel advice" table on this page; our guide to the [situation in Oman](/en/guides/situation-oman/) tracks how it changes. Photographing military sites and sensitive installations is forbidden.

## Getting there

- **By air.** Duqm airport is about 1 h 15 from Muscat on SalamAir, with Oman Air as codeshare partner.
- **By road.** About 530 km from Muscat airport via Adam and Haima, nearly seven hours. Our [driving in Oman](/en/guides/conduire-oman/) guide covers the rules of the road; it is best not to drive outside Muscat at night because of camels on the road.

## In and around town

The **Duqm Rock Garden** is a field of rock formations ranked among Oman's 25 most important geological sites; it is fenced, with a car park. **Duqm Beach** is the town's beach for a quiet afternoon.

Inland, the town's official website points to the **Khaluf dunes**, large shifting white dunes where a 4x4 is essential, and **Qarn Aswad**, a black volcanic plug rising from the sand plains.

## The Al Wusta coast

- **Ras Madrakah**, about 80 km south of Duqm, an hour and a half by road: silver sand, rocks and seabirds, with fishing and camping.
- **The Pink Beaches**, north-west of Al Kahil: seasonal coastal lagoons.
- **Bar Al Hikman**, a peninsula on the east coast: a major stopover for migratory birds, some from Siberia, with coral reefs offshore.
- **Ras Ar Ruways** marks the southern edge of the Sharqiya Sands, better known as the [Wahiba Sands](/en/oman/wahiba-sands/).
- Further north, **Masirah Island**, part of the South Sharqiya governorate, has a kitesurfing school that gives private lessons depending on the wind.

## The oryx reserve

The **Al Wusta Wildlife Reserve** keeps a herd of reintroduced Arabian oryx and a breeding centre with more than 600 animals. It lies 50 km off the Haima-Duqm road; entry requires a 4x4 and a permit arranged in advance. The Arabian Oryx Sanctuary was once a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but was removed from the list on 28 June 2007 after its protected area was cut by 90%, the first site ever to be delisted.

## Weather: the Masirah station

Readings from Duqm's own station are inconsistent, so the reference here is Masirah Island, further north on the same coast. Average highs run from 26.4 °C in January to 35.8 °C in May, then ease to around 31 °C in August: the khareef, the summer monsoon that cools Salalah, is felt here more faintly. The sea warms from 24 °C in winter to 28 °C in May. From October to March, highs stay between 26 and 32 °C.

## Where to stay

The Sabaro selection hotel is the **[Crowne Plaza Duqm](/en/hotels/crowne-plaza-duqm/)**, opened by IHG in 2013: 213 rooms including 21 suites, on the beach near the commercial port, with an outdoor pool and a meeting centre, as much a business hotel as a beach one. It is about 30 minutes from the airport; price on request.
