## A beach hotel designed by Galal Mahmoud

The Sofitel opened on 20 May 2016 on the edge of M'diq, on the road to Fnideq, right on the beach. The Accor group invested 600 million dirhams in it. The architecture is by Galal Mahmoud (GM Architects), with the Moroccan firm Ziyat; the project won Best New Hotel at the International Hotel Awards in 2011.

The design blends a contemporary spirit, Mediterranean influences and Moroccan tradition: bright colours, geometric shapes, contemporary art. The hotel lays claim to the Sofitel brand's French elegance, applied to Moroccan hospitality.

Unlike the neighbouring Banyan Tree, which is organised in villas, the Sofitel is a lively beach hotel with restaurants, late-night bars and a kids' club: it is the bay's address for families who want things going on.

## Room, suite or villa

The hotel has 104 rooms, suites and villas, most with a private terrace. For a beach stay, a sea-view Luxury room is worth the extra. The hotel recommends the Opera suite, with its hot tub facing the sea, and the Beach suite, feet in the sand with a private pool, to couples. The Signature villa, with its private pool, gives a family a space of its own.

## Children and teenagers

This is the hotel's strong point. The kids' club takes children aged 4 to 12 for supervised creative, sporting and cultural activities. Teenagers aged 13 to 17 have their own programme. There is also a children's pool and a kids' menu in the restaurants. A family offer inspired by The Little Prince gives 50% off a second room for the children.

For parents, the spa offers hammam rituals and treatments that blend Moroccan heritage with Sofitel know-how, with a heated indoor pool; it is open to outside guests. The palm-lined outdoor pool and a fitness centre complete the picture.

## A Robuchon restaurant on stilts

On 12 August 2024 the hotel opened **La Méditerranée by Robuchon**, a restaurant set on stilts, glazed from floor to ceiling, with a 360° view of the sea. The menu is devoted to fish and seafood, prepared with French and Mediterranean flair in the tradition of chef Joël Robuchon; at opening the kitchen was led by Qassim Bouhassoun, from L'Atelier Robuchon in London. You take an aperitif at the bar, then dine in the dining room or on the sea-facing terrace.

The other venues cover the rest of the day:

- **Le Marché des Saveurs**, a smart bistro with international food, and the breakfast room;
- **La Mosaïque**, Moroccan and eastern Mediterranean dishes for sharing;
- **Pachamama**, facing the sea, boho decor, Iberian flavours and Andalusian music, with a veranda and a terrace on the sand;
- **Elio Beach**, Mediterranean cooking;
- **La Voile Bleue**, by the pool, fish and seafood, a nod to the Voile Rouge club in Saint-Tropez;
- **Koudiaz Bar**, for early-evening cocktails, and **So Lounge**, for dancing at night.

## Sabaro's view

**Who it suits**: families with children and teenagers who want a beach stay with a club, restaurants and entertainment.

**Strengths**: the sandy beach in front of the hotel; a club for ages 4 to 12 and a programme for 13 to 17; La Méditerranée by Robuchon; a 4.6/5 rating from over 1,500 Tripadvisor reviews.

**Good to know**: some guests reported construction noise in June 2026 and uneven service; some only discover the price of sun loungers, around €60, and the tourist tax on arrival: ask for both when booking.

**Our advice**: come from June to September for the beach; in spring and autumn the hotel is quieter and makes a base for Tetouan, half an hour away, and Chefchaouen.
