Dar HI Life is the place to choose for a design-and-nature stay in southern Tunisia: an 18-room eco-lodge designed by French designer Matali Crasset, in the heart of the Nefta oasis, on the edge of the Corbeille. People come for the architecture, the quiet of the oasis, the hot spring water and simple food, far from the idea of a resort. It is run as a social enterprise linked to the Palm Lab association, and it appears in the Michelin Guide's selection of hotels in Tunisia.

## Architecture to live in

Matali Crasset designed four types of room, each facing the village, the desert or the oasis. The idea is to live in the landscape rather than look at it through a window:

- **Piloti**: small houses on concrete stilts, with walls that open onto the dunes and the palm grove, and a terrace with a shower and a daybed. For a couple who want the oasis view.
- **Troglodyte**: partly underground rooms that stay naturally cool, like the dug-out homes of southern Tunisia. The most pleasant when the sun is strong.
- **Dune**: multi-room units built on the sand, for a family or friends.
- **Dar Malika**: a riad-style house with a living room and a small kitchen, for a long stay or a small group.

Sizes and beds are not published; Sabaro asks the hotel before offering a room. Rooms have no television or telephone: the place is made for switching off.

## Hot water and wellbeing

Nefta is a town of springs, and Dar HI makes the most of it. The hotel's pool is fed by sulphurous geothermal hot water. The spa combines a traditional hammam, massage rooms, steam baths, a meditation space and a yoga room. The hotel runs yoga and meditation retreats: check when booking whether one falls during your stay. See also [spa and wellness](/en/themes/spa-and-wellness/).

## Food

The cooking is in the hands of Najet, a cook from Nefta, who prepares simple, healthy dishes. Meals are served at a table d'hôte, around an open kitchen, rather than in a conventional restaurant.

## Nefta and the Jerid

The hotel is in the Ezzaouia quarter, on the edge of the Corbeille (Ras el-Aïn), the amphitheatre-shaped hollow that once held 152 springs and around which the town grew. Nefta is a centre of Sufism, the mystical tradition of Islam, with many zaouias, the shrines of its saints. The hotel organises walks in the oasis and the desert.

Nearby:

- Tozeur, its Ouled el-Hadef medina and its palm grove, about 20 km away;
- Ong Jmel and the Mos Espa set, built for *Star Wars*, north-west of Nefta (see our [Star Wars in Tunisia](/en/guides/star-wars-tunisie/) guide);
- Chott el Djerid, the vast salt flat between Tozeur and Kébili.

Details are on our [Tozeur and Nefta](/en/tunisia/tozeur-nefta/) page.

## What foreign ministries say

Nefta is 30 km from the Algerian border. European foreign ministries do not all give the same advice for the area. Several advise against travel south and south-east of the line Algerian border – Tozeur/Nefta – Douz – Ksar Ghilane – Tataouine – Zarzis, or south of a similar line: desert walks south of Nefta fall within that area, and Sabaro does not offer them. The mountain oases of Chebika, Tamerza and Midès, inside the 10 km strip along the border, are advised against by several ministries. Your country's advice:

## Getting there and practicalities

Tozeur-Nefta International Airport (TOE) is about 15 minutes away by car. From October to June it has direct flights from France; Nefta is a few hours' flight from Europe's main cities, direct or with one stop. The hotel arranges transfers on request. Reception is open 24 hours, check-in is at 3 pm and check-out at noon, local time, and pets are welcome.

## Season

The Jerid is pleasant from October to April, with highs from 17 °C in January to 27 °C in April at Tozeur; winter nights drop to around 7 °C. Summer is scorching, with an average July high of 40 °C. The hotel announces no summer closure; Sabaro checks opening for a stay between June and September. Ramadan 2027 is expected from 8 February to 9 March.

## Price and tourist tax

In October 2026, for two nights from 9 March 2027, the cheapest room was offered on the official website at about €210 a night for two adults, breakfast and taxes included, on a non-refundable rate.

Tunisia's tourist tax is paid on top, on site: TND 8 per person per night in three-star hotels and TND 12 in four- and five-star hotels, for up to ten nights; Sabaro confirms the amount the hotel charges. At the Central Bank of Tunisia rate of 19 October 2026, €1 buys TND 3.36.
