## A month set by the sun

Ramadan is the month of fasting for Muslims: from dawn to sunset, they do not eat, drink or smoke. According to astronomical calculations, Ramadan 1448 should begin on Monday 8 February 2027 and last until 8 or 9 March. In Morocco, the official date is announced by the Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs the evening before, after sighting of the crescent moon; it may differ by one day from the Gulf countries.

The fast is broken at sunset, at ftour, the meal that ends the day's fast. By Sabaro's calculation, the sun sets in Marrakech around 18:10 local time at the start of the month and around 18:35 at the end; in Fes, about fifteen minutes earlier. Since 20 September 2026, Morocco has been on GMT all year round: there is no longer a change of time at the start or end of Ramadan, and throughout the month the country is the same time as London.

The month ends with Eid al-Fitr, expected on 9 or 10 March 2027. It is a two-day public holiday in Morocco, on 1 and 2 Shawwal, given over to families.

## What changes for travellers

Travellers who are not Muslim are not expected to fast. Eating, drinking, smoking or chewing gum in public in the daytime may cause offence, and the tiredness of fasting is felt most in the late afternoon. At your hotel, riad and in tourist areas, you eat as usual; elsewhere, many restaurants stay closed until ftour. For alcohol, Sabaro recommends asking your hotel, before booking, what it serves during the month.

Sites stay open, sometimes with shorter hours. Sabaro recommends sightseeing in the morning, keeping the late afternoon for the riad or the pool, and avoiding the road in the hour before ftour. The guide [Travelling in Morocco during Ramadan](/en/guides/travelling-in-morocco-during-ramadan/) sets out the customs, the rules and how to plan a stay.

## The evenings

Ramadan is lived above all at night. At ftour, the streets empty all at once, then the town fills up again: families out, cafés full, souks busy until late. Ftour often opens with dates and harira, the traditional soup. Sabaro recommends sharing one, with your host or with a family: it is when a traveller best sees what this month means.

## Where to go in February 2027

Winter days are mild in the south of the country: in Marrakech, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) climate normals, the average January maximum is 19.1 °C. During Ramadan, the days there are quiet for sightseeing. In the Agafay desert, near Marrakech, the Scarabeo camps welcome guests all year round, Ramadan included. Just before, the Marrakech International Marathon is run on 31 January; afterwards, the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair opens to the public at La Mamounia on 20 and 21 March.
